While Charlotte is focusing on uncovering sordid information on columnist Daniel Wilmot, her heart leads her into uncharted territory.
During the summer of 1900 Charlotte Hale, a native Newporter and secretary for the Rhode Island Reporter, accepts an undercover assignment as temporary governess to Daniel Wilmont's children in order to secretly gather evidence against him. As he helps her rediscover God, Charlotte learns that Daniel is an honorable man.
They unexpectedly fall in love despite their different backgrounds and social positions. Charlotte soon realizes she must defend Daniel against the forces set against him-a willful student with a romantic crush and the newspaper editor determined to destroy his reputation.
Review
In today's world undercover female reporters are pretty well known and common. In the early 1900's however female investigators were unheard of. After the drama in Love on a Dime, Charlotte finds herself finally working and ready to take on the world as a fresh new reporter working for the Rhode Island Reporter. First investigative job up....undercover governess.
Charlotte is a bit hesitant to do what’s been asked of her, but the longing to be a real journalist and gain recognition as a serious reporter helps make the decision to say yes and begin working for Daniel Wilmont, someone her boss thinks is a religious nut job. Charlotte's main priority is to find something in Daniels life to use against him. He writes a column for the competitor newspaper and anything to stop his rants or discredit who he is will please her boss and surely stop his writing career.
This assignment which Charlotte viewed as the start of her journalistic career, a fun adventure and new beginning has led to surprising outcomes for her. Not only does Charlotte feel morally guilty in attempting to slander Daniel but something funny is happening to her every time he walks in the room…every time he glances her way…..yes my helpless romantic friends…Charlotte is in-love. As she learns more about Daniels accuser and about the lies surrounding him, her mission changes and she finds that defending Daniel even at the risk of her own job is the right thing to do.
I highly enjoyed reading this novel, I thought the writing was charming and lightly sprinkled with enough romance to keep me swooning and enough moral doing the right thing to make it a bit serious. While the plotline was overly predictable in spots, I thought the characters story was engaging and they certainly captivated me throughout the book. Anyone who loves cozy, wholesome stories will appreciate and enjoy Cara Lynn James fun series.

You know, I'm finding that I'm enjoying wholesome romances more and more. There is something so sweet and simple about them that completely draws me in. I'm not much of a historical fiction reader, but journalism lover in me wants to give this one a try. ;)
