Author Guest Post~ Karen Ann Hopkins Author of YA Novel Temptation & Giveaway!!

Today Im thrilled to have Karen Ann Hopkins author of Young Adult novel Temptation on Tinasbookreviews. Karen will be sharing some facts about the Amish Community in her area and the small things she's learned about the teen life in the Amish community.

A day in the life of an Amish Teen by Karen Hopkins

Hard work and responsibility are parts of every Amish teen’s life. Whether girl or boy, they’re expected to contribute to the household’s income and livelihood. After graduating in the eighth grade, Amish teens are finished with schooling and thrust into the workforce, either leaving the home for a forty hour work week or putting that much time into in a family business. Jobs include carpentry, metal work, farming, and welding for the boys and butchery, bakery, woodworking, retail, teaching, child care, and housecleaning for the girls. Usually, 90% of a teen’s income is given to the family as an intricate part of the family’s financial survival. Part of the ten percent that the teens retain is saved towards the teen’s future married life, while the rest is for their own enjoyment.

Even though Amish teens work hard, they also play hard. Oftentimes, they will take short trips with their church groups, visit relatives and friends, and participate in activities such as hunting, horseback riding and skiing. A usual day for an Amish teen begins at five o’clock in the morning, followed by prayer, breakfast and morning chores. After working an eight hour work day, the youth will arrive home to afternoon chores before dinner with the family. The evenings are playtime for the young people. They can be found at the church’s youth group gatherings, such as signings and ball games or they may be seen riding their horses or bikes on the roadways.

Five things I’ve learned from the Amish:

Just a few random facts.

1) They are not taught geography or science in school.

2) Their families deal with many of the same problems as everyone else, such

as marital, financial and child rearing.

3) If an Amish couple does divorce, which is highly unlikely, they are not

allowed to remarry.

4) Amish families often move around, relocating to another region or state

due to problems within their community.

5) The Amish pay federal and state tax, but not social security tax.

Love stories that inspired Temptation:

Romeo and Juliet, and Twilight are two stories that I can name that gave inspiration to Rose and Noah’s story. There are similarities in all three romances from the forbidden nature of the affairs to the struggle for the couples to be together. In TEMPTATION, however, the external forces are only part of the difficulties facing the young lovers. The aspect of whether Rose and Noah are willing to give up their own world is the driving conflict of the story.

GIVEAWAY

Thanks so much Karen for stopping by today. I loved that guest post!!
Today Karen is giving away one brand new copy of her book Temptation. This is open to everyone including international readers. To enter please leave a comment and a way to get in touch with you (email, link to profile) Winner will be drawn September 10, 2012. Thanks and goodluck.

Your heart misleads you. That's what my friends and family say. But I love Noah. And he loves me.

We met and fell in love in the sleepy farming community of Meadowview, while we rode our horses together through the grassy fields and in those moments in each other's arms.

It should be ROSE & NOAH  forever, easy.

But it won't be. Because he's Amish.

And I'm not.....

A native of New York State, Karen Ann Hopkins now lives with her family on a farm in northern Kentucky, where her neighbors in all directions are members of a strict Amish community. Her unique perspective became the inspiration for the story of star-crossed lovers Rose and Noah. When she’s not homeschooling her kids, giving riding lessons or tending to a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats, she is dreaming up her next romantic novel.

She grows closer to both Jackson and a young man named Richard Hathaway, whose family histories are each deeply entwined with her own. But when the visions start to threaten the person she holds most dear, Sarah must do everything she can to get to the bottom of the house's secrets, and stop the course of history before it is cemented forever.

Measuring Up by Nyrae Dawn
August 2012 (eBook-Indie)

Seventeen-year-old Annabel Conway is tired of the Hillcrest High School elite making her life miserable because she’s not a size two. This summer, she's hiring a personal trainer to help her lose weight.

Annabel doesn’t expect her trainer to be a gorgeous guy around her age. Boys like Tegan are jerks. They pretend to like girls like her so they can make an idiot out of them. Been there, done that. Totally not going there again. She kind of hates him on principal. Blond. Muscular. Funny. It doesn’t help that he knows her measurements! Soon, Tegan's so much more than that. He’s the boy who teaches her to box when she has a bad day. Who jogs with her and lets her set the pace. Who kisses her until she melts. He makes her feel beautiful regardless of what the scale says. Unlike her mom, he doesn’t expect perfection, and he doesn't try to shield her from the world like her dad and best friend. Tegan likes her the way she is.

But what happens when he’s not there? He can’t always be there… Will Annabel be able to stand on her own and learn that she already measures up? That her worth doesn’t lie in what the world thinks, the scale says, or even what Tegan tells her—but in herself?

Talk about some books that have set my reader antennae a flame!!! I cant wait to hop into the world cute boys, mysterious secrets, music, mansions and mad ROBOTS!!!!

The Saturday Spotlight~Featuring Michaela Debelius and Giveaway of Decoy

Welcome to the Saturday Spotlight, a weekly feature that shines the light on Indie and Debut authors. This week I have the pleasure introducing readers to:

MICHAELA DEBELIUS
~Q&A with Author of Decoy~.

Hi Michaela, welcome to Tinasbookreviews, please tell us about yourself.

My name is Michaela Debelius. I’m an indie author who writes paranormal romance that, depending on the reader’s definition, borders on science fiction. I’m originally from New England, but I currently live in Arizona with my husband and two furry children.

What inspired you to write Decoy?

Decoy itself came to existence in a very normal fashion, though the road to get there was quite the learning experience. When I decided I wanted to write a novel length piece, I thought about all the aspects that, for me, comprise a really great, fun book. I’ve always enjoyed all things paranormal. With my insatiable love for zombie and apocalypse movies, I’m pretty sure I’d thrive in an Armageddon situation. I’d do just about anything to have a conversation with Dean Koontz, a mastermind in my opinion. So when I asked myself what I’d like to read if I were the reader, I knew I wanted to create a book that was plot-driven and dark, but had just enough salacious details to satisfy a good romance craving.

Indie Publishing.....good experience or hard road?

Both! Without hesitation I say both. Indie publishing is great because you get to do what you set out to accomplish: have someone read your book. I wanted someone to enjoy it, even if it was just one person, and I wasn’t getting there with traditional publishing. It’s an extraordinarily tough market and without a previously published work or a degree, it’s almost impossible to get someone to pay attention. The beauty of living in the technology age is the wonderful invention of e-readers. With e-readers the consumer gets to decide what’s good and what’s not. We no longer have to let someone else make that decision for us. But, and this is a big but, there is a lot of work that goes into self-publishing. Between formatting, which takes days if you’ve never done it before, and spending hours every week contacting blogs to request a book review, you really have to have strict discipline to work in some time for writing. You spend half your time promoting your last book while struggling to turn out pages for your next. But if you’re self-motivated, you can set and meet deadlines, and you’re willing to pound some virtual pavement in order to get your work outside of your immediate family, it’s worth it. I’ve never done anything the “routine” way so no one was shocked when I announced I was self-publishing.

If you could pick a song that encapsulated Decoy what would it be and why?

There are two songs that I used to help me get into the mindset for Decoy. The first is “Breath” by Breaking Benjamin. There’s a dark passion in that song, a longing for a wicked and destructing temptation, and that quality is felt by both Noel and Killian towards each other.

The second song, which helped me in the later part of the novel, is “Enchanted” by Taylor Swift. The whimsical, whirl-wind, heady, yet completely unrealistic feeling would resonate with Noel. The song is absolutely beautiful with such a magical quality. To someone as grounded as her, it would seem fanciful and fluffy. But when she meets Killian, she suddenly understands what it’s like to be captivated by a complete stranger.

What would you like readers to walk away with after reading your book?

I hope they walk away feeling entertained. What I really want is to offer an outlet, a form of escapism, for anyone who needs a break from the stressors of life, or is simply looking to step into another world for a few moments. There’s nothing better than a book that is so engulfing you’re thinking about it while you’re washing the dishes or driving to work and you’re just dying to get back into bed, curl up with a cup of tea, and slip back into their realm. There’s something so indulgent when you find a book that keeps you up well past your bedtime, struggling to keep your eyes open as you keep telling yourself, “Just one more page.” If you feel sad that it’s over after reading the last sentence, then I’ve done my job.

Can you share any future plans?

I’m currently working on a new novel with an immortal protagonist. Unlike the usual immortal characters, she doesn’t have any special abilities. She’s jaded and detached, even from her own kind. Her character developed after spending too much time watching the news and I thought about what it would be like to live forever in a world that can often be far too cruel. It’d be easy to become so overwhelmed with negativity if you felt life was endless with no final outcome. Of course, there’s a romantic sub-plot as well.

As far as Decoy, Noel’s story is definitely not over. I’m anticipating her sequel to be released in the summer of 2013, so make sure to check back!

Lieutenant Noel Casey is taken aback by her newest military assignment. Her usual routine of vaccine development is interrupted when she's assigned to analyze Killian, a genetically engineered soldier designed for exceptional strength and intelligence. She's not accustomed to working with human subjects, especially a person created for warfare, and Killian's indifference is making it difficult to see past his robotic demeanor.

When Noel is attacked outside Killian's containment quarters, he is forced to intervene. The altruistic act instantly transforms their relationship, though neither will admit to the shift in sentiment. The predator is now the protector in Noel's eyes, and she's thrown off by her growing captivation.

As if her infatuation with a virtual stranger isn't enough of a distraction, she begins having terrifying nightmares. Her cryptic dreams appear to harbor an elusive warning as she watches them materialize into existence, proving the nightly visions foretelling. She starts to suspect the military base is concealing far more than an experimental soldier, and she can't shake the feeling Killian is the axis of the chaos. Noel must decide whether she'll accept the unconvincing explanations offered by her peers, or reject her comfortable environment for an unimaginable truth. With her premonitions pointing towards a violent outcome and her irrational draw to Killian becoming impossible to ignore, she realizes the choice has already been made for her. Noel's understanding of science is about to be shattered.

Book Review~Crimson Groves by Ashley Robertson

Crimson Groves by Ashley Robertson
November 9, 2011 by Author (Indie eBook)
Paperback, 277 Pages
Review Copy

Abby knows what its like to have life turned upside down on her, recently her heart was broken due to the indiscretion of her boyfriend and best friend...who she found in bed together. Depressed, lonely and a very much vulnerable, Abby spends her nights working as a bartender and wallows in the bar community. When a particular night brings the handsome, mysterious Bronx who zeros in on her almost immediately she lets the conversion, the flirting and his distraction carry her away......all the way to his apartment. Not that Abby intended to go with Bronx to his place, but the nice, interesting, handsome guy turns into a major D-bag in the span of two minutes. He seduces her and lures her to his place due to his vampire powers. When he gets Abby there he sexually pounces on her and winds up turning her into a vampire as well. When Abby awakens as one of the undead, she knows life again has turned on her.

Bronx holds Abby captive while he waits for her to submit to the new life as a vampire and the forever psycho love he is offering. As she remains pretty much subdued in her actions, her mind is in overdrive with plots to escape and be free of the lunatic imprisoning her.She waits and abides her time, knowing that she can outsmart Bronx when necessary. When the "couple" does go on their first outing its to a donor club (a place where humans volunteer their blood to vampires) the plot twists and Abby finally gets a chance to escape Bronx with Travis, a donor who helps her get away. Together they try and figure her vampire life out, keep her away from Bronx and try not to fall in love with each other.

Crimson Groves was an interesting take on the much hyped genre of vampires, I loved the originality of the story and the determination and smarts of main character Abby. While I really enjoyed Abby's character, including her whit and dialog, I found her to be way too trusting, most her willing to give the benefit of a doubt obviously got her into the most trouble during the book, for being smart, she lacked commonsense at crucial points in decision making. The book itself in the beginning proved to be challenging for me, it took awhile to get into Robertson's style of writing as I found the sentences very fragmented and a tad choppy, or rather the flow of novel felt stilted. Once Abby escapes Bronx though I got used to the flux of the writing and mostly enjoyed the middle and ending. It was different and certainty a unique offering in the vast world of vampire tales.

I would recommend Crimson Groves to lovers of paranormal, especially the vampire genre.

Rating

Recommended to mature teen readers (17&up) and contains: Violence, language, drinking and sexuality.

The Different Girl by Gordon Dahlquist
February 1, 2013 by Dutton
Four nearly identical girls on a desert island. An unexpected new arrival. A gently warped near future where nothing is quite as it seems. Veronika. Caroline. Isobel. Eleanor. One blond, one brunette, one redhead, one with hair black as tar. Four otherwise identical girls who spend their days in sync, tasked to learn. But when May, a very different kind of girl—the lone survivor of a recent shipwreck—suddenly and mysteriously arrives on the island, an unsettling mirror is about to be held up to the life the girls have never before questioned. Sly and unsettling, Gordon Dahlquist’s timeless and evocative storytelling blurs the lines between contemporary and sci-fi with a story that is sure to linger in readers’ minds long after the final page has been turned.

As the search commences to find her sister, the twin left behind must rely on their intense bond to uncover the truth. But is there anyone around her she can trust, when everyone could be a suspect? And ultimately, can she even trust herself?

Cover Reveal and Blurb: Forged by Greed a YA novel by Angela Orlowski Peart

Introducing
Forged by Greed~Angela Orlowski Peart

"Their choice had been taken away long before they were born"

Two Seattle 16-year-old Shape Shifters, Jatred and Jasmira, are torn between following their hearts and protecting the order of the world. The ancient Shape Shifter Races—the Winter wolves and the Summer leopards—exist on Earth, living among humans and perfectly fitting into modern life. Their secret societies are organized, each united by their own laws and traditions.

Two Goddesses, Crystal and Amber command their respective Races. One is on a quest to tilt the scale of power to her side. The other will never let it happen, even if it means sacrificing Jatred and Jasmira’s love.

The Amulet commissioned to bring stability into the world remains hidden and concealed with the help of advanced technology. Jatred is the guardian of the Amulet and key to the Goddesses’ conflict.

The forces of nature are disrupted. Earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions rake the world. The Goddesses go to war and summon all their Shifters to join in the conflict. Jatred and Jasmira fight not only for their star-crossed love but to protect the future of both Races and humankind.

Excerpt:

The wolf stood under the trees, several yards from the fence. His eyes were fixed on the stone statues. He growled and took a few slow steps back. Then he sprang forward and ran full speed toward the gate. His upper lip drew back, showing sharp, long canines. He jumped over the spikes of the fence, his belly inches away from the pointed iron finials. The wolf landed on the other side and left large paw prints on the freshly mowed grass. He lost his balance but regained it momentarily.
He heard her footsteps even before he heard her voice.
“Jatred!” From the house Jasmira ran toward him. Her long curly hair billowed behind her. “J, you made it. You made it.”
The wolf whimpered and trotted forward to meet her. Without slowing down, she threw herself onto him. Her hands grabbed his thick fur. His body was massive, and Jasmira looked like a child hugging an uncommonly large dog. The air around them pulsed and shivered. Jatred shifted into his human form and fell onto his back. Jasmira sprawled on top of him. Holding his face in her hands, she kissed him. His face broke into a broad smile.

She is a member of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Western Washington Chapter (http://www.scbwi.org), and several authors’ and readers’ networking groups on Linkedin and Goodreads.

Angela loves reading good books almost as much as writing them. She can’t decide which is her favorite season—summer or fall. She speaks with Polish accent, but loves listening to the Southern drawl. She is passionate about watercolor painting, fashion—especially stilettos, rock climbing, environment, and organic food and gardening. She lives in the Seattle area with her husband, two children, and a very independent and chronically curious cat.
