Discussion Questions

Waterfall opens with the introduction of Gabi, shes depressed, a little angry and is dealing with feelings of loneliness. Are you connecting with her this soon in the novel? Do you see things you like or dislike?

For me- I connected with Gabi right away, I think she is just beginning to show us how strong she really is. I know I couldn't scale castle walls, Id break my legs and my face. As of yet I don't see anything I don't like, she actually has a bit spunk that Im loving.

Gabi gets to time travel back to 14th Century Italy- The Dark Ages in its prime. Is there anytime in history that fascinates you and would you travel back if you could?

Ive always been fascinated with The Dark Ages and 10th Century Greece and the Spartans. Now I would probably never want to travel back to these two periods of time and only because of the political wars and the way people lived....I mean hello who the heck wants a case of black plaque??

If I could travel back to anytime and be a part of the society- Id say the 1950's and the rise of suburban America....I would of been the total June Cleaver with pink appliances....LOL....that is until 1967 when I would have burned my bra, sported braids and flowers in my hair while jamming to Janis Joplin.

Most of the men, including Marcello have a very set opinion about a woman's place. Gabi gets manhandled a bit in these first few chapters, and even gets asked if shes a witch. The men are shocked when Gabi rides a horse like a man and shimmies down the castle walls. What do you think of mens mentality back then? Gentlemanly, chauvinistic, simple-minded?

I think the men in that time era weren't simple-minded, maybe chauvinistic at times to me because Im from the 21st Century, but there was no women's-lib or civil right movements back then. People "even the women" saw gender roles in black and white and you just didn't monkey with those traditions. I mean think about how much control the Catholic Church had, people couldn't even worship God the way they wanted to...and heaven forbid if you got caught doing something like showing a little ankle. Personally if I had to guess, women may have gotten the dog bone in war and politics, but I think they were respected in the sense that they were the life givers and life then was so precious due to all the disease and death the people dealt with.

When Gabi becomes a part of this era, the people are immediately intrigued but suspicious of her. Many judge her by her difference. Do you think this is fair? Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like an outsider or that others were misjudging you?

Judgement and prejudice is never fair, for obvious reasons though Gabi was different and this put her in the spotlight- if you really think about where she was and Gabis culture verses their culture it only makes sense that people would jump to conclusions, be interested or awed by her. We humans haven't evolved that much over time, we are quick to judge, quick to worship and quick to follow others, that's why I think Gabis character was so inspiring, she was a natural leader, who followed no one.

Ive had one experience where I felt misjudged and that was within my own "religious" community, what I did was wrong (one of those open mouth before I thought actions) but there was no forgiveness after...to this day I felt what I did came from someplace good -I just didn't use my words wisely- after the backlash, I felt like Romeo...totally banished.....oh well...life go's on.......

What do think the coolest thing would be about living in the Dark Ages? What would be the worst?

I think the best thing would be the society aspects. People lived so differently yet cherished much more than we do today. Because life was so precious people valued their family time. Their weddings were so beautiful, their traditions so simple yet so endearing.

The worst- oh my gosh that would be all the hygiene issues. I couldn't imagine not having a toilet and having to use a chamber pot or not having my Bed Head products!! I think I would freak without my tooth brush. I mean seriously how did people make-out or *ahem* make babies when there was all that dragon breath and BO going around....blaaaccchhhh!!

It’s been more than a decade since Alzheimer’s disease first claimed Charlotte Mueller’s mind, but Krista has dutifully kept her mother in a first-class nursing home. Now Charlotte is dying of heart failure and, surprised by her own emotions, Krista rushes to Taos, New Mexico, to sit at her estranged mother’s side as she slips away. Battling feelings of loss, abandonment, and relief, Krista is also unsettled by her proximity to Dane McConnell, director of the nursing home—and, once upon a time, her first love.  Before I go to Sleep by S.J Watson
June 14, 2011 by Harper

As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me ...' Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep? Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight. And the one person you trust may only be telling you half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.......

Sees cover of Michelle Zinks new book and does happy dance...... even if this book is just blank pages that cover is worth buying.....GORGEOUS...... and I cant wait to read Isle of Night, it may have a cheesy cover but it sounds awesome. Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Enclave by Ann Aguirre
Hardcover, 259 pages
April 12th 2011 by Feiwel & Friends
Review Copy

In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning. As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.

Review

Girl15 grew up in the tunnels (subways/sewers) underground the earth where the days held no sunlight, where disease, infection and malnourishment killed half of them and when living past 16 years old was considered a victory. When 15 makes it to naming day, endures her six scars and becomes a hunter her name is changed to Deuce and because shes one of the best, is teamed up with the Enclave's most vicious hunter...Fade. The hunters not only have to face the unknown like disease or tunnel animals, but they will face their biggest fears and fight the freaks, zombie like people living outside of the tunnel camps in search of food and supplies for the living. Each outing could be the last and one bite from a freak could lead to infection or worse...becoming one of them.

Its during these hunts and training with Fade, that Deuce begins understanding that the things she was taught aren't necessarily the way she should be living. She begins to see the injustice and unfair ways the people are treated in this almost communist-like setting and with uneasy understanding, Deuce realizes that they have been duped and raised with lies and fear to control them. When chance offers an opportunity for Fade and Deuce to go against the clave and protect an innocent breeder, they are banished and sent topside to a world unknown but not empty to the people who were left behind. Gangs, freaks, even sunlight all threaten to kill our two hero's making their way into a world abandoned by government and laws and a place where only the strong survive.

How could I describe Enclave to you, Id say I am Legend meets The City of Ember in this dark and grimy world. Aguirre presents a thrilling and dangerous ride, with a touch of paranormal in a mixture of dystopian reality and urban darkness. I found little fault with this book, its fast plot and great writing moved things along well, but that's not to say everything was perfect. I found its senseless violence for pure entertainment sake when it came to the gang issues somewhat disturbing. Survival of the fittest rang true among the humans just as it did fighting the freaks and as hard as it was at times to read about kids fighting and killing each other, I was also able to look past that and see this violence as a part of Deuce and Fades reality.

Parts of the story, its abrupt, oh that's where its going ending and especially the debacle of Deuce and Fades relationship irked me to no get out, as the reader I saw these characters letting unsaid words and miscommunication change them and I found side-characters taking on roles for only the love triangle dynamics, not something I wanted in this story, however for drama sake I can see the benefits of throwing these stones into the fragile couples relationship. Deuce herself makes up in character for her tough and edgy exterior where cliched ya romance failed- I hope Aguirre was punking me with that last jag of the book.....(Im looking at you Deuce in woods with tattoo boy)......All in all though, Enclave was a great read, it will make you gasp, leave you guessing and promise to make you come back for more.....

Rating

Enclave is recommended to teens (14&up) and adult readers. Contains: Graphic violence, murder, gang fights, combat style training, freaks/zombie gore, mild sensuality and mild if any language.

4.5/5- Ya-Dystopia

The Saturday Spotlight- Double Edition- Shining the Light on Female Authors

Welcome to the Saturday Spotlight, a weekly feature hosted by yours truly and celebrates authors. Focusing on Indie, self-published and debut authors, we love them all. This week I have the pleasure of introducing readers to:

Today is a special double-feature spotlight focusing on two female authors, each focusing on two different spectrum's of literature. First off I have the pleasure introducing readers to

Melody Scott
~author of Auraria Dead~

Author Bio:

Melody Scott was born in San Diego, and graduated from Cal Poly in Pomona, California, After marrying and moving to Cumming, Georgia, she became enamored of the land and obtained her Georgia Real Estate license in 1978.  Buying and selling, moving and investing became a way of life until she was drawn to write novels about the land, the history of which still holds a mystique for her.

Today she belongs to the Board of Realtors, Chamber of Commerce, two writing groups, a book club, Sisters In Crime, and Southeastern Mystery Writers of America.

Auraria Dead by Melody Scott

Auraria Dead is a real estate mystery/romantic/cozy with a twist.  It involves gold mines, Cherokee Indians, crazy relatives and a bit of romance. When two realtors go to see a property they want to sell and fall into a gold mine shaft, they find a skeleton wearing an ex-husband’s coat. To put her mind at rest, the protagonist tries to contact her ex, but a little child answers the phone. Meanwhile, the man she’s involved with seems to be using her, she’s trying to make a buck and her real estate partner is undermining their deal.  Her cousin won’t keep her clothes on and her father isn't who she’s thought he was for almost forty years.

Today I also have the pleasure of introducing readers to:

Teresa Joyce
~author of Its a Fine Line~
-Interview Questions and Answers provided by Author-

Why did you decide to share your story with the world?

This is a very good question and one I have asked myself many times over. The answer is not very black and white; it’s was a combination of many factories. It truth at first it was a way of trying to heal myself, if I could just revisit that dark place then maybe I could find some sort of closure. Seeing it down in print made me face my demons, there was no longer any choice. It became so very real and I was made to look into the face of hell - my hell. As my book progressed it was clear that it was becoming much more than that. It was also recognition of a life, and one that I stand in awe of every time I think of her. That someone enriched my life tenfold, I am proud to be able to call that person my mum. This story needed to be shared with the world for that reason alone. I was also hoping to be able to reach out to others, those which may need a hand to hold. Not unlike finding some form of camaraderie in numbers, cemented by the fact that others could and would understand. I am here to say that there is light at the end of the tunnel; you just need to reach for it. It was a message that I needed to get out there to share, that you can and will survive this with faith. To condense this all down by sharing a chapter in my life at its darkest point, maybe it could help others with their own.

For your memoir you decided to write it yourself instead of using a ghost writer, are you happy with that decision now that the book is complete?

I understand that this book/memoir is just a little different to most other memoirs, as you rightly say I was the one to right this, choosing not to use a Ghost writer. This is something I never even considered, to my mind I had to be the one to do this. I had to somehow try to express the feelings and emotions I felt within its pages, ultimately as no other person could. The best outcome being that you would take the journey with me, strongly believing that this time I would not be alone. I had to travel down that path no question, but it was a lonely road to walk. So the answer to your question is yes I am very happy with the decision I made, no other decision was even in the equation.

What message do you want your readers to grasp?

This question has to be answered two fold. Many things happen to us throughout our life time some good some bad. The good hopefully outweighs the bad, but for others that sadly is not the case. People looking in on us as we go through such a traumatic life changing experience, may find its content hard to understand. There is a knee jerk reaction that tells them to turn away; if they don’t recognize it it’s simply not there. By sharing my experience, I am hoping to hold their attention just enough to dispel their fears. Secondly I am hoping to make anyone in a similar situation aware that there is help out there, that you can survive this because you are stronger then you think. There’s a place somewhere deep inside of all of us that has yet been untapped; if you have never had occasion to do so you are unaware of its strength. But at your darkest moment as long as you believe, hold on to life and love you will survive.

What advice would you give to someone that is in an abuse situation?

It has taken many years of my life to realize, that maybe I was not to blame for everything going on around me at that time, that feeling to be honest never really goes away. I could say that I am now at easy with my involvement, but that would be untrue. So where do you go from there? Forgiveness has to be the answer. Firstly you need to try and forgive yourself, to heal the child that’s inside of us all. The other side of the coin is so much harder, you have to try and make headway in forgiving your abuser. Holding on to all that pain is only creating a mountain of hate which has no real purpose, by holding on to that pain your abuser is still very much in control. I am not in the least saying this will be easy, how could I when I am still struggling to do just that myself. But we have to believe that it’s possible.

Was writing the book in some way therapeutic for you?

Was it therapeutic....... not an easy one to answer. The day I sat down to write I had never been so scared in my life could I really do this? Could I revisit that dark place and come out of it the other end? It was a long hard journey but one I knew I had to take. Sitting here now I know that it has helped me enormously. But while writing there were times that I could not face the next chapter sentence or even the next word. So yes it has been therapeutic, but at that time it was like looking into the fires of hell.

Was your decision to write 'There's a fine line' planned or was it a spontaneous decision?

I could not say that it was planned because in truth; it sort of crept up on me from behind getting closer as time passed. To me it seemed like the best way to deal with the demons lurking in the dark corners of my mind. I didn't get up one day and think lets go write a book! It started as something much smaller - i.e. if I could just write everything down it would feel somewhat like unloading. I could not continue to carry around this amount of emotion/pain any longer without any release. Somewhere along the line it became a book, but at what point this changed I am unsure it just seemed to evolve. Maybe it was the need to help others to do just that, to unload their pain and to face their own demons. You see if my book only helps one person that recognizes its content, then it will have been worth all the pain inflicted.

**please note: for safety reasons Teresa cannot show her picture and has written under a pen name**

Thanks lady's for stopping by today and I wish you all the best with the the success of your novels.

Tgif {10} - Book Associations

Tgif is a great weekly meme hosted and created by Ginger at Greads. This feature lets us wrap up the week and also poses a weekly question pertaining to blogging, books and what have you. This weeks question:

Book Associations: Which genre, authors, or particular books do you think people associate with your reading style?

Well after talking to some of my favorite bloggie buddies the consensus about Tinas blog is that Im an eclectic blogger and reader. Most of the feedback I got, told me I was a mix of adult and ya reads mostly focusing on contemporary, inspirational, dystopian and a touch of paranormal.

And that would be me in a nutshell.....try as I might, I could never box myself into one genre. I admire the blogs that can do that, I however am pretty much eclectic in everything. My books, my music, my movies, my clothing. I guess everyday for me is an adventure, sometimes I like PJ pants, sometimes I like skirts...sometimes I like vampires and other days I want sweet wholesome cowboys......

Eve by Anna Carey - Review

Eve by Anna Carey
October 4, 2011 by HarperTeen
Hardcover, 320 Pages
Review-Galley

The year is 2032, sixteen years after a deadly virus—and the vaccine intended to protect against it—wiped out most of the earth’s population. The night before eighteen-year-old Eve’s graduation from her all-girls school she discovers what really happens to new graduates, and the horrifying fate that awaits her.
Fleeing the only home she’s ever known, Eve sets off on a long, treacherous journey, searching for a place she can survive. Along the way she encounters Caleb, a rough, rebellious boy living in the wild. Separated from men her whole life, Eve has been taught to fear them, but Caleb slowly wins her trust...and her heart. He promises to protect her, but when soldiers begin hunting them, Eve must choose between true love and her life.

Review

There are worse things to be than educated.........

You could be one of the wilds.... You could be one of the forgotten... or beings that have succumb to the deadly virus. Not everyone has the privilege to be trained and then let go to work in the city's......not everyone is chosen to be a part of a greater society.....

and that's where we find our eager- to do good-yet- naive- at the same time heroine- Eve.

Eve proudly awaits her graduation, knowing that the step across the river will bring intense study and an opportunity to gain talents in the job the King deems her fit for. Eve and her classmates have been raised in an all-girls school, keeping their body's healthy and taking "special" medicine that will prepare them for the gruelling studies ahead..aka..college or further advancement to our characters...or to the reader looking in...aka...a prison full of girls who are strapped to beds and impregnated against their will until basically their uterus falls out and they die.......

Horrible as it sounds, most of the teens are ignorantly and blissfully unaware of their fates. No one knows the building across the river marks the doom of their futures. Until the night before graduation Eve has esteemed herself to the top the class and that eagerness has placed her in the spotlight of the Kings desire, however when a fellow classmate escapes and warns Eve of the danger to come in the morning, she cant help but investigate things for herself. Sneaking across the river (why didn't you do this years ago chick???) and seeing whats happening inside the building brings all of Eve's hopes and dreams crumbling down. The horror is to much to bear and even after years (YEARS) of brainwashing, the terror of her circumstances pushes Eve to run away. Alone, scared and never having being around men, equals a girl smart in books but stupid in survival skills. That is until Eve meets Caleb, a wild boy who lives among a small underground community of..you guessed it...........boys........

Well kiss my grits its another dystopian featuring a naive girl who gains the smarts and a cute boy who saves the day!! Comparing this (as marketed) to Atwood's Hand Maiden might have been over stepping its draw- but fear not dystopian lovers, Eve even with her flaws has merit. While I enjoyed reading this somber little story, I did find myself reaching conclusions and figuring things out long before the characters. The read itself clipped along at an eager pace but only gave me a skeletal outlook of Eves world, in other words this first taste was just the bag of bones setting us up for good things to come. Like Eve's name, her escape was the beginning of ones story, there is no background nor major plot or character development, but I see the potential in whats to come. While many holes are screaming to be filled, characters fates are left unsaid, the story was easily digested. Despite its abrupt ending and small world-building for book one, its promise to pull you into yet another series offers a little something different in the world of teen dystopia. With its hard pull towards female-empowerment, Im interested to see where Carey takes her boys and girls.......

Another thing to note is that the book while containing dark subject matter, really is tame for a ya audience, which I cannot throw stones at, (as a parent Im not going to encourage literature that depicts depravity and sex to children) and while Im normally looking for the more grit in dystopia, Carey created a suspenseful and bleak environment suitable for younger readers to delve into, without the raw and gritty dealings normal in a society like this one. In other words, this is great for middle-grade and youngish highschool versus college or adult readers.

Rating

Eve is recommended to teen readers/adults 14&up and contains: Violence, topics on slavery, imprisonment, forced pregnancies, attempted rape, parent-less society's and educational brainwashing.

After her dearest friend, Ilven, kills herself to escape an arranged marriage, Felicita chooses freedom over privilege. She fakes her own death and leaves her sheltered life as one of Pelimburg’s magical elite behind. Living in the slums, scrubbing dishes for a living, she falls for charismatic Dash while also becoming fascinated with vampire Jannik. Then something shocking washes up on the beach: Ilven’s death has called out of the sea a dangerous, wild magic. Felicita must decide whether her loyalties lie with the family she abandoned . . . or with those who would twist this dark power to destroy Pelimburg’s caste system, and the whole city along with it.

Everneath by Brodi Ashton
January 3rd 2012 by Harper Collins

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists. Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen. As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's.

The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman
October 4th 2011 by Simon & Schuster

In 70 CE, nine hundred Jews held out for months against armies of Romans on a mountain in the Judean desert, Masada. According to the ancient historian Josephus, two women and five children survived. Based on this tragic historical event, Hoffman weaves a spellbinding tale of four extraordinary, bold, resourceful, and sensuous women, each of whom has come to Masada by a different path. Yael’s mother died in childbirth, and her father never forgave her for that death. Revka, a village baker’s wife, watched the horrifically brutal murder of her daughter by Roman soldiers; she brings to Masada her twin grandsons, rendered mute by their own witness. Aziza is a warrior’s daughter, raised as a boy, a fearless rider and expert marksman, who finds passion with another soldier. Shirah is wise in the ways of ancient magic and medicine, a woman with uncanny insight and power. The lives of these four complex and fiercely independent women intersect in the desperate days of the siege, as the Romans draw near. All are dovekeepers, and all are also keeping secrets—about who they are, where they come from, who fathered them, and whom they love.

Sleight by Jennifer Sommersby
March 23, 2011 by Accendo Press

When circus-dwelling Gemma Flannery learns she will be attending public school for the first time in her seventeen years, little does she know that fitting in with her 12th-grade classmates will be the least of her concerns. A pro at hiding her knack for seeing the dead (“shades”), Gemma is grieving the recent suicide of her mentally ill mother, a process eased by the introduction of her first real love interest, the charming and painfully handsome Henry Dmitri, who is harboring his own collection of dangerous secrets. Together, they will be presented with a frightening challenge: to assume their roles as heirs to a 3000-year-old magical text, the AVRAKEDAVRA, a book the über-rich, sleight-of-being master Lucian Dmitri would do anything to get his hands on. As each terrifying layer in her new reality melts away, Gemma unearths truths that her quiet, nomadic life with the Cinzio Traveling Players is not at all what she’d always cherished. Gemma and Henry must rely on each other to stop Lucian’s diabolical plotting that will bring the world to its tired, scab-riddled knees, and are sent on the flight of their young lives, to save themselves, their families, and the world from the darkest kind of destruction..........Let the chase begin...
