Chatting with Authors~Featuring Jordan Link and Giveaway of The Sacrificed

Chatting with authors @Tinasbookreviews is welcoming author Jordan Link to the blog for a little chat and a little giveaway. Today's question:

Has a mood, setting or place ever inspired you to write?

Inspired by the Clouds
by Jordan Link-2013

Nothing major inspired me to open my laptop, to watch as the little blue light came to life and spilled light over my keyboard. As I typed the first word of The Sacrificed, which soon became another, and a third, I can only say that one thing effected my whimsical world.

I remember peering out the window as night fell upon the state, Maryland, wondering how long the shower would last. The room was bathed in a grayish hue, and, as stereotypical as that may sound, it was absolutely true. I could see the sidewalks, glossy with water as pedestrians rushed toward their homes. The walks darkened with every drop that pattered against their concrete surfaces: it seemed that they would never embody their lighter shade again. With that drowsy, torpid scene in mind, I allowed the influence of the outside world to seep through the minuscule cracks in my window, and onto the pages of Word.

Excerpt

It began to rain, at first a slight drizzle, then pouring from the sky in endless, thick torrents. Emerald and Dusk were silent as they watched the world around them turn gray. Emerald thought of her future the same way — erratic, uncertain. Maybe one day things would be different. Maybe the blood sacrifices would diminish, and the number of Accused would subside. But now, the reliance upon a council that created a deep chasm between the winged and walkers had no lack of believers. And belief, as Emerald knew, was not always for the better.

The storm picked up, the gusts of wind that tumbled by causing the fragile buildings to lean slightly to one side. “I think I should go,” Dusk said, his ethereal voice reverberating in their sheltered enclosure.

She stared at him for a moment, tucking a loose lock of brown hair behind one ear, then grinned. “You go. I’ll climb down the windowsills until I reach the ground. Maybe one of those Black Eagles will see me struggling and decide to assist.”

Dusk glowered at her. But even the solemn winged boy couldn't stop a grin from breaking out across his pale features. A second later, he was laughing, and the sound filled her with lightness. It was rather musical, and sliced through the rain like a sword. Emerald began to laugh too. Unlike his, her laugh was silky and quiet, and surprisingly comforting. Dusk was just as relaxed as she was now; he had leaned closer to her.

“Let’s get down from here, then.” He paused in the midst of another thought, his own gentle hands pressed against his knees. “Did you ever wish you had wings, Emerald Hayden?”

“I wish that I had wings, just like I wish there were no Accused.” It was a simple statement, but a strong one. It was wishing for the impossible, but she still did it in spite of herself. In spite of how her world worked.

In that second he grabbed her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers, and leapt from the perch.

Jordan Link is currently contracted with Entranced Publishing for her novel "The Sacrificed", which will be released on May 6, 2013. She won first place in Jack L. Chalker's Young Writers Contest of 2012 for her short story “The Bubble”, and attended Balticon 46 last year. She earned an honorable mention on December 3rd for the Young Voices Foundation Short Story Contest and will be published in their anthology "Oh, the Stories They Tell!" which will be available on Amazon. Her early love of reading inspired an equivalent passion towards writing, and she plans to continue doing so.

The Saturday Spotlight~Featuring Brad Cotton and Giveaway of A Work in Progress

Welcome to the Saturday Spotlight, a weekly feature that shines the light on Indie and Debut authors. This week I have the pleasure introducing readers to:

BRAD COTTON
~Author of A Work in Progress~

The questions I get asked most often......
by Brad Cotton- 2013

When it comes to reading, writing, and publishing, I don’t have all the answers. In fact, I have about 3. However, I do get asked the following questions most often, so I thought I would take this opportunity to share my answers with you. Please take these responses with a grain shaker of salt.

Questions from readers:

How much of A Work in Progress is autobiographical?

I get this one a lot, especially after someone reads the book. The answer is pretty much none of it. The book starts off with the main character recovering from certain personal traumas – one of them being getting dumped by his long-time girlfriend who then moves out of the country. That particular unfortunate event did happen to me. However everything that follows in the book is complete fiction. I never met or knew any of the characters, nor did anything in the book ever happen to me, or to anyone I know. I think we all learned our lesson from A Million Little Pieces.

Why did you become a writer?

If you asked my beloved high school English teacher about me, she would no doubt tell you, “Never heard of him”. What this means is that, contrary to a popular response, I did not know early on that writing was what I wanted to do. If class attendance and grades were any indication, most would have predicted me not on a bookshelf, but more so on parole. I won’t give you the old cliché that you don’t choose to be a writer, but that writing chooses you, because I would have to punch myself in the face. But I will say, it’s a cliché for a reason. I can’t paint, I can’t sing, but writing just comes naturally. I can’t help but do it. If you look at my bank statement, you’d know that I didn't become a writer for the money. So it must be something else.

What would you be if you weren't a writer?

A neurosurgeon or a grocery bagger. Maybe both.

How long did it take you to write A Work in Progress?

Believe it or not, people ask me this all the time. It took me 8-months-ish to finish the initial draft. I took a 2-month break in the middle and was holding down a full-time job at the time. I think people ask me this to gauge how long it would take them to write one of their own. For that, however, there is no benchmark. I know people who have written a full-length novel in two weeks. I know authors who have been working on the same book for 3 years. If you’re thinking about writing a book – just go and do it. And don’t ask any more questions about it until you’re done. Go and do it right now. There is no better time.

Will you come to my party?

Yes. Yes I will.

Questions from Writers:

Did you study writing in school?

That’s a tough one. The answer is no, and yes. While I didn't major in English literature, or writing composition, or anything like that, I always read and studied with a discerning eye. The same goes for television shows I watched, movies I went to, lies I told, and so on. After a while, people with a certain disposition tend to pick up on what works, what doesn't  what makes a compelling story, and what stalls one. Of course, everyone will have a differing opinion on these things, but there are some fast rules that tend to apply across the board. A great line of dialogue, a cool idea, a punchy sentence, etc., will be just that no matter where you come upon it. Authors are just people who instinctively take that stuff in, store it, and then choose to share with others how they see the world (or how they want to see the world) using what they've gathered. (It’s a very similar thing for stand-up comedians, I would imagine). It’s about perspective and insight and material, and I don’t think that can really be taught. Delivery, however, can be taught; though it’s something a writer can never finish practicing… unless you’re Hemmingway. But I’m not Hemmingway.

How did you get published?

I got published the old fashioned way. I finished my manuscript, then found a freelance editor and paid to have it edited myself. Once I had a polished piece, I began a querying campaign. Many, many rejections from publishers soon followed, as did self-pity, until one day a letter came in with a positive response. I am truly thankful for my publisher. Though I’m considering going indie with my next book.

What? Why are you considering going Indie?

I’m glad you asked. This answer to this could be a post all it’s own. I think to sum it up would be to do a disservice. For a thorough answer that would be close to my own, check out this post from Hugh Howey: www.hughhowey.com/my-advice-to-aspiring-authors/

Do you have any other advice for aspiring writers?

Yes - there’s no such think as aspiring writers. If you write, you’re a writer. Just like if you run you’re a runner, and if you paint you’re a painter. Some make a living doing these things, but most do not.

Read On Writing by Stephen King. Let as many people read your writing as often as you can. Don’t expect to make money, but don’t ever stop chasing an audience. Help out other writers as much as possible, whenever possible. Be prepared to be your own best marketer/publicist/agent/advocate. Keep writing. Keep reading.

Questions from my mother:

Did you visit your Grandmother?

I did. You left your scarf there.

General Questions:

What’s your favorite Book? Movie? Music?

The book that influenced me the most was Catcher in the Rye. If you’re familiar with all the conspiracy theories related to the title, fear not. I’m far too apathetic to attempt assassination of a President or a Beatle. It was simply the first book I was forced to read that actually resonated, and it piqued my interest in literature. Plus, there’s only two Beatles left… and they’ll get theirs soon enough.

When I was younger my favorite movie was Braveheart, but… Gibson? Really? There’s a train wreck I can turn away from. These days I’m more into indie movies. They seem to have more integrity. I just watched The Words. I liked it a lot. If I had to pick a recent favorite: Barney’s Version.

If you’re looking for good music, look deep. If you hear it on the radio you know it will be replaced very soon. Search out music like you search out books. Follow the path of what you like and find the ones buried. A few bands in my iPod today: Elbow, Cat Empire, Stars, and P.G. Wodehouse. That’s an audiobook. Wodehouse rocks.

When is your next book coming out?

Good question! My next book is called Boundless. It will be out later this year. It’s about two guys, an escape, a road trip, a pretty girl, a dead body, another pretty girl, and ultimately: what happens when two people venture out to discover who they really are.

Were can I buy your book?

Amazon

How do I get to the highway from here?

Always head south and hope for the best.

Born and raised in Toronto, Brad Cotton has been writing professionally for over a decade. An average guitarist, a subpar painter, and a horrible juggler of anything larger than a tangerine, he is currently married to a woman, but does not have a cat, a drum set or any children. A Work in Progress is his first novel.

Book Review~The Edge of Never by J.A Redmerski

November 15, 2012 by CreateSpace
Kindle- 423 Pages
New Adult- Contemporary
Purchased

In this almost gritty, almost dark story of 20-something Camryn, we get a whole lot of drama in a little amount of time. Traveling across the country to an unknown destination is bound to make anyone edgy, pack on a pile of dead boyfriend and best friend issues and you get the idea of our main character who is running away just to catch her breath. During this little high tale it outta town adventure, Camryn meets Andrew, another character {who is of course mysterious, gentlemanly, sensitive, kinda controlling, funny, musically talented and hawt} on the run from his current problems, packed filled with daddy issues and pending doom.

The two meet on a bus, both traveling for different reasons and not wanting to interact with other people, yet somehow feel a magnetic pull towards each other. An easy friendship develops over the hours of traveling and an unexpected turn of events launches them into not only a bus ride to nowhere but a road trip to discovery, coming of age and true you guessed it: Love.

Not expecting to like this as much as I did, I was really surprised that 3/4 of this book rendered me speechless- as in love with the story-line speechless-  I loved the way these characters connected, I loved the slowly developing but enigmatic chemistry of the relationship and I adored the plot when it centered around an epic road trip that would change both characters for the good, you know that whole I met my soul mate on a bus thing.

Yup, I loved this until about the last 75 pages when my road trip turned into a mix of cheap motel sex, Country Strong and My Sisters Keeper, morphing the story and the characters into new ones. The sex scenes and addition of they may become Americas next Country stars, were weird. By weird, I  mean I knew these characters at some point were going to collide but when it happened I was like -Whoa- the unexpected "porno-vibe" and there after talk of domination and rape like fantasies didn't fit with the dynamic of the romance that was building in the beginning. I wanted sweet, I wanted tender, but what I got was dirty and a little nasty. D&A works for some stuff, but in this case it just left me with mixed feelings and feeling kinda embarrassed for the characters, due to the fact that instead of a reader I felt like a voyeur and that my friends ruined part of the story for me.

Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first part, loved the concept and tried not to roll my eyes at the end and still gave this four stars for the writing and originality. So by all means let not my moral compass of not liking cheap hotel sex steer you wrong, contemporary romance lovers or New Adult fans will gobble this up and see it as one of the more stronger Indie new adults out there.

Rating

Recommended to 18&up readers and contains: Violence, language, graphic sexuality, drug/alcohol use, depression/grief issues.

4/5- New Adult

Blog Tour~Featuring Amy Noelle author of Code Red and Giveaway

Welcome to the Code Red Blog Tour. Today I have the pleasure of welcoming Amy Noelle to the blog to tell us about her inspiration for Code Red.

Inspiration for Code Red
by Amy Noelle

I’d like to claim that I had a group of friends and we had our own Code Red in college, but that’s not the case! I woke up one day with Nicole’s voice in my head and I knew she had a major wall up and why, but not what she did to protect herself. The Code Red idea came out of that, along with of course women’s tried and true methods of avoidance like having a friend call you to get you out of a bad date and the lesbian lie and all that good stuff. Yes, I have used both of those a time or two in my life to avoid a man, but not the “right” man. Always the wrong one!

(cc)Aussiegal
I just loved the idea of these women providing the strength needed not to give into temptation. Of course, as you read the book, you find out that when the Code Red was actually for Mr. Right, the friends didn't so much help avoid as push together! Which, of course, is what Nic’s friends kind of do when she wants to run from Josh. They realize that this is the first guy she’s had feelings for in ages and they don’t want her to miss out on what the majority of them have. And Nic helped them in their situations, so of course they want to do the same for her. Nic’s one stubborn woman, though.

I don’t have those close ties with college friends any longer and I miss and envy Nic’s relationship with her girls. They are truly a family for one another and they don’t hide their opinions or mince words with Nic when they feel she’s being unreasonable and closing herself off for no good reason. Her ex did hurt her, to be sure, but she’s definitely over that. She’s just afraid of taking a chance and risking her heart again. It can be a scary thing that most of us likely relate to! I know I do!

How many random ideas came from drunken nights with friends? I’m sure we’ve all enacted a few! And that’s where Code Red came from, watching TV and hating on men. The women had different reasons for deciding to go along with it. Nic and Mandy were of course burned by the same man. Kim is driven and doesn’t want distractions. Jen is shy. Ashley is just going along because it seems like a good idea at the time, especially after watching her roommate get hurt. Together they form a pretty formidable unit. Good thing they occasionally work against instead of for each other or they’d all be single!

While we may not have had our own Code Reds, I think the majority of people can relate to being afraid to take that jump into a relationship. Not all of us take it to the extreme that Nic does, but I think we’ve all been there in one form or another. She has a great support system to get her through and if I wish one thing for my readers, it’s that they have great friends or family or, especially, their own Code Red that they fought for instead of ran from! Ultimately, he just may be worth it!

Amy Noelle is a thirty-something single woman with two cats, Lily and Logan. Though she contends that she is not a crazy cat lady, she freely admits to being a crazy football fan. You can find her glued to the couch every fall weekend, cheering on her Seminoles and Buccaneers. After attending Florida State University for two years, she transferred to Northern Illinois University and graduated in 1997 with degrees in Journalism and Political Science. She was born in the Azores Islands, Portugal, and lived as a military brat from the west coast to the east coast of the United States, though she's found her permanent home in Tampa, Florida, for the last decade. Besides football and writing, her other loves are television, movies, the beach, thunderstorms, and her family and friends.

After getting hurt in college by a gorgeous man, Nicole Magette vowed never to risk losing her heart again. Now she lives a structured and satisfying life. Her work is easy, her friends are her family, and the only consistent men in her life are her two cats, Winchester and Huntington Peabody the Third. She doesn't date, and she hooks up only with losers—men she has absolutely no risk of falling for. But if she finds herself in danger, she has her old fail-safe in place—the Code Red.

In college, she and her four best friends came up with the system as a way to keep away the good-looking bastards that might worm their way past their carefully constructed walls. Seven years later, three of her friends have succumbed to their last Code Reds and are happily married. Now it’s just Nicole and her closest friend, Jen, who are still on their own, and Nic is just fine with that.

That is, until Joshua Daniels is transferred to Nicole’s office from New York and assigned to work with her on a special project. He's everything she's avoided and everything she claims she doesn't want, so why can’t she get him out of her mind? He's persistent, dangerously handsome, and sexy as sin. In other words, he’s her worst nightmare. She turns to her friends to help her resist Josh’s considerable charms and the inescapable draw she feels every time she gets near him. Can the Code Red save her this time, or will Josh send her perfectly balanced life into chaos?

Thanks for being on the blog today Amy! To find out more about this author:

One Tiny Lie by K.A Tucker
June 11, 2013 by Atria
New Adult-Contemporary

Livie has always been the stable one of the two Cleary sisters, handling her parents' tragic death and Kacey's self-destructive phase with strength and maturity. But underneath that exterior is a little girl hanging onto the last words her father ever spoke to her. “Make me proud,” he had said. She promised she would...and she’s done her best over the past seven years with every choice, with every word, with every action.

Livie walks into Princeton with a solid plan, and she’s dead set on delivering on it: Rock her classes, set herself up for medical school, and meet a good, respectable guy that she’s going to someday marry. What isn’t part of her plan are Jell-O shots, a lovable, party animal roommate she can’t say ‘no’ to, and Ashton, the gorgeous captain of the men’s rowing team. Definitely him. He’s an arrogant ass who makes Livie’s usually non-existent temper flare and everything she doesn’t want in a guy. Worse, he’s best friends and roommates with Connor, who happens to fits Livie’s criteria perfectly. So why does she keep thinking about Ashton? As Livie finds herself facing mediocre grades, career aspirations she no longer thinks she can handle, and feelings for Ashton that she shouldn’t have, she’s forced to let go of her last promise to her father and, with it, the only identity that she knows.

The Saturday Spotlight with Molly Cochran and Giveaway of Legacy and Poison

Welcome to the Saturday Spotlight, a weekly feature that shines the light on Indie and Debut authors. This week I have the pleasure introducing readers to:

MOLLY COCHRAN
~Author of Legacy~

A Different Romance
by Molly Cochran- 2013

In LEGACY and POISON—YA paranormal about a boarding school in the most witch-dense town in America—two teenagers, Peter and Katy, meet, fall in love… and then fight nonstop. They disagree about nearly everything, from the value of the school dance to solving a crime of high magic.

With each book my editor, publisher, or agent (and often all three) pull their hair out while shouting, “for God’s sake, we need MORE ROMANCE with these two!”

“But there’s plenty,” I protest. And there is. It’s just not the kind of romance we expect.

Peter and Katy start out hating each other. Peter resents the legacy of evil that Katy’s powerful, long-dead mother has left, and Katy, being new in town and having never heard about her controversial parent, can’t understand why she’s being treated so badly. But even after that issue is cleared up between them, others arise: Peter wants to protect Katy, while Katy can’t bear to think of herself as needing protection. Peter finds a job working for his rich uncle; Katy resents the time he spends away from her. Katy can travel to another dimension, but Peter only wants to keep her at home.

Push, pull. It’s not a fairy-tale romance. But it is true love. When push comes not to pull, but to shove, Peter is Katy’s rock. He climbs down a burning building for her. He walks through a mile of mud with Katy’s unconscious (and presumably dead) body in his arms. He risks life and limb again and again in her service. And Katy—well, after learning that Peter has to take another girl to Winter Frolic, she actually goes to the dance alone because he asks her to. Now that’s devotion!

Not all stories end with the characters living happily ever after. In fact, if we’re honest, none of them really do. There’s always something that makes life difficult, and for two people who love each other, the adventure lies not in eternal, beatific smiles, but in the knowledge that when things get rough, your chosen one, grumpy and eye-rolling as s/he may be, is going to come through for you, now and always.

That’s love.

Chatting with Authors~Featuring S.T Bende and Elsker Giveaway

Today I'm welcoming S.T Bende author of Elsker to the blog for a little chat. Since I don't know to much about this book and am interested to learn more; Today's question:

What is Elsker all about? And can we meet some of the characters?

Thanks so much for letting me visit today. As a new author, it means the world to me to get to write for such a great book blog! I’m so excited to introduce you to one of the characters from my debut series.

THE ELSKER SAGA tells the story of twenty-year-old Kristia Tostenson and her journey from her one-stoplight hometown to Cardiff University in Wales. Her world expands exponentially when she falls in love with Ull Myhr, the Norse God of Winter. Ull introduces her to his best friends, Inga and Gunnar Andersson, and Kristia finds herself in a mythology-packed adventure that surpasses her craziest dreams. Since Kristia’s a little shy, I thought I’d use Inga to share the world of ELSKER. I hope you find her as sassy as I do.

Five Reasons Being A Norse Goddess Rocks. By Inga Jensson Andersson

We have a Thor.
(CC) DUNECHASER
~ Yep, Ull, Gunnar and I have been on extended vacation in your realm long enough, and we've seen your movies. You people are obsessed. Just so you know, the real Thor is my buddy Ull’s step-dad. And he only wishes he looked like that cutie pie Chris Hemsworth. Our Thor is older, wrinklier, and way more intimidating. He could literally crush you with Mjölnir (his giant hammer). Your movie Thor is far too attractive to frighten anyone. No offense, cutie pie. And no offense real Thor, either -- I’m totally not saying you’re unattractive. Not at all, Sir. I mean, you snagged Ull’s mom for a wife, and she’s Goddess of Beauty. No, you’re a total catch, honest. I’d better stop now…

We’re so awesome, you mortals name your days of the week after us.
~ Not all the days, but a good chunk of them. Your Tuesday? Tyr’s Dag (dag is Day in Norse). Tyr is God of War -- and he’s majorly cranky about it. Wednesday is Odin’s Dag, Odin’s day. Odin is our big kahuna, the Father of All Things. He’s also Ull’s grandfather, and he only has one eye. Thursday is Thor’s Dag. I know you know Thor, God of Thunder, has the giant hammer Mjolnir, the whole shebang. Friday is Freya’s Dag. Freya rides around on a chariot pulled by cats. I’d prefer an IndyCar, but to each her own.

Your composers write songs about us.
~ If Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries isn't one of the most amazing pieces ever, I don’t know what is. Wish I could be a Valkyrie…

We can travel between the realms any time we want on a magic rainbow bridge called the Bifrost.
~ No reservations, no airport security lines, no baggage fees. We just pop on over to Heimdall (the bridge boss), tell him where we want to go, and poof! Instant transport. Pretty sweet, huh?

We’re so much more fabulous than those Greek goddesses.
~ I don’t mean anything against Athena, Hera and the gang, but we could totally crush them. I mean, while they’re sitting in olive groves writing poetry and swooning over all those “yusses” (Andronicus, Titus, Oedipus…) we’re using flying goddesses to train dead humans to fight our battles. *waves* (See Number 3, Valkyries.) And don’t even get me started on the clothes. Have you ever seen a Greek goddess wearing anything but a toga and sandals? Don’t get me wrong, I love me a great pair of sandals -- especially the strappy kind that wraps all the way up the calf. But there’s a time for strappy sandals and there’s a time for killer heels. Louboutins, Jimmy Choos, Manolos… And then there’s riding boots, wedges, and the occasional ballet flat. You’re goddesses girls -- why limit yourself to one kind of footwear? Think outside the sandal. Am I right, ladies?

And Two Reasons It Doesn't Rock

There’s a hierarchy in Asgard, and Odin forgot to make me a Titled goddess.
~Obviously I’m supposed to be Domestic Goddess, so this was a major oversight on Odin’s part.

We’re all going to die at some epic battle called Ragnarok.
~ But hey, we’re doing it for you. Asgard will fall so Midgard can prosper. You’re welcome, Earth.

But other than that, being a goddess is a pretty good deal. I hate to cut this short but I have to dash -- I've got a paper to write, and a date with Gunnar to get ready for. We’re hitting the go-kart track tonight, how fun is that? Until next time!

Kisses,

Inga.

Before finding domestic bliss in suburbia, ST Bende lived in Manhattan Beach (became overly fond of Peet’s Coffee) and Europe… where she became overly fond of the musical Cats. Her love of Scandinavian culture and a very patient Norwegian teacher inspired The Elsker Saga. She hopes her characters make you smile and that one day pastries will be considered a health food. You can follow ST Bende on Twitter @stbende, or send an e-mail to stbende(at)gmail(dot)com.

Kristia Tostenson prefers Earl Grey to Grey Goose and book clubs to nightclubs, but when she transfers from her one-stoplight town to Cardiff University in Wales she falls in love with Ull Myhr. Her new boyfriend isn’t exactly what she was expecting. He’s an honest-to-goodness Norse God — an immortal assassin fated to die at Ragnarok, the battle destined to destroy Asgard and Earth. Kristia’s crazy visions are the only thing that can save their realms.

Her orderly life just got very messy.

Thanks for stopping by today S.T! Today one lucky commenter will win an eBook copy of Elsker!

Book Review~Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

April 2, 2013 {reprint} by Harper Perennial
Paperback, 368 Pages
Adult-Contemporary
Review Copy
From the moment it opens—on a rocky patch of Italian coastline, circa 1962, when a daydreaming young innkeeper looks out over the water and spies a mysterious woman approaching him on a boat—Jess Walter’s Beautiful Ruins is a dazzling, yet deeply human, roller coaster of a novel. From the lavish set of Cleopatra to the shabby revelry of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, to the back lots of contemporary Hollywood, Beautiful Ruins is gloriously inventive and constantly surprising—a story of flawed yet fascinating people navigating the rocky shores of their lives while clinging to their improbable dreams.

Beautiful Ruins begins its intoxicating tale with Pasquale Tursi, a native from Porto Vergogna, a well known town distinguished by its failure and a few upside down morals. Pasquale like his recently deceased father believes in his little village, he sees the potential of the land and its people so against popular thought he stays on his family estate and begins rebuilding and renovating an old hotel in hopes that it will attract American tourists.

Attract it does, and the first is a famous Hollywood actress Dee Moray. She winds up staying at the hotel and in the process shares that shes meeting an old friend and also dying. Pasquale riveted by Dee's beauty and the slight pull he feels to help her is obliged to find her friend when he never shows up. Its in pursuit of this "friend" where the story really begins as old Hollywood and various stories collide in a beautiful disaster.

Its almost impossible to write a review for this book, due to the feeling that I get for others in order to understand the book you must experience the read. The best way I can describe Beautiful Ruins is interesting magic, interesting due to its story-line and magic due to its incredible transitions and flow between various time frames. Funny, outrageous, sad and heartwarming all at the same time, a novel contemporary lovers will devour and others will appreciate for its exemplary writing and unique presentation.

4/5- Thanks to Tlc and Harper for review copy

Jess Walter is the author of six novels, including the national bestseller The Financial Lives of the Poets, the National Book Award finalist The Zero, and Citizen Vince, winner of the Edgar Award for best novel. His collection of short fiction, We Live in Water, has just been published by Harper Perennial. He lives in Spokane, Washington. Find out more about Jess at his website and follow him onTwitter.

The Saturday Spotlight with Jill Hughey and Giveaway of Vain

Welcome to the Saturday Spotlight, a weekly feature that shines the light on Indie and Debut authors. This week I have the pleasure introducing readers to:

JILL HUGHEY
~Author of Vain~

Thank you, Tina, for having me in your Spotlight today! I’m excited about my new release called Vain, book three in my Evolution Series. In this historical romance, a tailor’s abandoned daughter fashions a vain nobleman’s tunic, finding passion between the neckline and hem as misfortune forces her into his precarious aristocratic world.

You cover many genres here, so I will talk about why people who enjoy contemporary fiction should give my historicals a try. (Hopefully the blurb above was enough to entice your readers who already love the historical genre.)

Language

I don’t use “thither” and “shan’t” and other affectations. I strive to keep my dialogue a little more formal to give a sense of the time period, but still very readable.

Nitty Gritty Life

My stories are set in the Middle Ages in Charlemagne’s empire. Vain is in 839. The empire faces its third civil war in a decade. Intrigue, violence, and political posturing are very much part of our hero’s life. He is Theophilus, Lord of Ribeauville, but don’t worry, he is referred to as Theo most of the time. Theo is a man of power and status, but he is feeling unfulfilled now that he is settled into his “job” as a nobleman.

Lily, our heroine, does not lead a sheltered or pampered life. She is a merchant whose world is falling apart and she is doing her best to fix it.
Differences of the Time

I don’t shy away from the rustic life of the 800s. Reading fiction should be like taking a journey, and I try to carry my readers back in time to show both the advantages and disadvantages of the time period.

Advantage: No phone, no email, no texts. Let’s take a romantic, uninterrupted walk together with Lily and Theo.

Disadvantage: No phone, no email, no texts!!! How will Theo ever find out that Lily needs him?!?!??!!

These differences create a specific set of challenges for the author of historical fiction. It is hard to describe the things that are missing. How do you convey that saddles did not have stirrups without using the word stirrup? Can you imagine that chimneys were not really in use yet? It was hard to give up on the idea of an interlude by the fireplace, but fireplaces didn't exist.

Social Expectations

We all live within the structure of our society. Some of us more than others. Many contemporary romances now are built around the single parent. Single moms who have never been married are characters we can sympathize with but still carry a little bit of stigma. In Vain, I didn’t go so far as to make Lily an unwed mother because that would have been off the charts in the 800s, but she is left alone, and the townspeople become suspicious of her morals. She is judged, and who among us can’t relate to that?

I try to keep all my characters realistic for the time period. The heroes are not omniscient, super-rich,gods. None of the heroines are sword-wielding warriors or potion-making witches. They are all generally nice people – except for Doeg, the hero of Redeemed – doing their best to find a path through their lives, and luckily, they all find love on the way. (Doeg was the villain in the first book, and the hero in the second, so his path has a little steeper climb than most).

What better way to sell you on my style of writing than to give you a sip of the wine? This excerpt is from a scene for the first fitting of the new tunic Lily is making for Theo.

BEGINNING OF EXCERPT

Lily did not know what had changed. For just a moment, her lord had appeared angry, and now he jerked at the tunic like it did not fit properly when, in fact, she had done admirably well. “Please, my lord,” she interjected when the pins and threads tacking the tops of the shoulder became visible between the pieces of fabric. “You do not have to decide now. You also do not have to destroy it. I will fix whatever has displeased you.”

He froze. His hazel eyes, heated instead of droopy with kindness, flicked onto her. “Will you?”

She retreated another step, unsure of his meaning. The distrust on his face oddly combined with sudden, intense interest. This fitting had become very strange. Her insides had sparkled when she touched him. Could he have sensed that? “My lord, if you are satisfied with the general fit, I will have plenty of work to do. You can decide about the sleeves and hem another day.”

He straightened, finally letting the hem drop, but kept his narrowed eyes on her. “I like the sleeve where you have it. I am undecided on the hem,” he finally intoned with careful enunciation.

She lifted her hand to indicate his arm. “Can I just mark it, sir? The roll will come undone when you take the tunic off.” His eyes narrowed even further. He nodded curtly. She scurried to find her chalk and made one quick streak of white on the sleeve. “Should I help you?” she asked, trying to recover their professional manner of dealing with one another.

“No. Wait outside while I change,” he ordered.

Oh, dear. She rushed out the door, flustered. What had happened? Everything had been fine until she’d begun making adjustments to his hem. That had felt horribly awkward to her. Had it bothered him too? She had been trying to do her job briskly, just as her father had always done. Maybe a man did not mind another man touching his hem but very much minded a woman doing so. Lily sighed, pressing her back against the wall, then resting her head there, as well. Even though she occupied the same world she always had, every day brought unforeseen and unfamiliar questions and challenges. She did her best to guess and fool her way through it all. In truth, the only time she felt comfortable in her own skin was when she worked on the lord’s tunic. Or at least she felt comfortable when her lord was not in the tunic as she worked on it.

She sighed. If only her father had returned. He would have that hem rolled and marked in a thrice. He would explain Riculf. He would talk to Cluny and set her life on the right course again.

Her lord emerged, once again smartly attired in the green tunic and mantle she had sewn last spring about this time. He did not know she had sewn it. Her father had done the fitting. She had made every cut and stitch. “Father is never coming back, is he?” she blurted.

The question did not surprise him. He stood straight and proud and confident in his own comfortable life. “Not soon enough,” he said.

At first she did not understand the answer. Then it clicked. Not soon enough to help you. Not soon enough to manage Riculf or Cluny. Not soon enough to return you to normalcy or even respectability. “He lives with a woman?” she asked, eager to familiarize herself with all the ugliness at once.

Her lord cursed softly under his breath. “Yes. He misses your mother desperately.”

Her hand flew up, and she pressed the back of it to her mouth, stifling an unwanted sob of distress. She turned away to compose herself. “It must be very difficult for him,” she observed with the feeling of seeing things from a great distance.

“I did try, Lily. I reminded him of his duty to you. I reminded him of your mother. I tried every argument.”

Unwarranted resentment boiled up in her. Who was this Theophilus to involve himself in her life? Why should she feel gratitude when he stood so calmly to tell her how bad things were? Why should he be allowed to make her uncomfortable in her own shop? How dare he? She bit the inside of her cheek against the angry, unfair slander she wished to shout at him. “Thank you, my lord,” she gritted as meekly as she could manage. “I appreciate your efforts today. I am sure you have pleasanter plans for tomorrow. Now, I must continue my work.”

She forced herself stiffly through the door. She did not close it until she heard her lord’s retreating footsteps. The tunic waited, lovingly spread on the worktable. Her strange, quick anger receded, replaced with the more sane and familiar despair. Her fingertip traced across the slightly overlarge shoulder to the clever neckline. This neckline was the only perfect thing left in the entire world, as near as she could tell. Tonight, she would rework the shoulders. Tomorrow, she would sew the pleats and join the body pieces and sleeves. Soon, she promised herself, she would make tiny invisible stitches around this neckline, and that would be one right thing. And she must consider the embroidery. She must devote some time to the pattern.

Blessedly immersed in her work, she did not let herself think about Father anymore.

Jill Hughey has loved historical romance since sneaking peeks at her mother’s library years ago. She has enjoyed writing just as long. She prides herself on deep character development, and settings that take her readers on long, satisfying journeys to places they have probably never been in a book before. Jill lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two sons. Her hobby is singing lessons, in which she studies classical soprano and some lighthearted works.

Lily had her life planned, neat and tidy as thread on a spindle, until her mother died and her father snipped at the seams of her future by abandoning Lily in their shop. A nobleman unexpectedly gives her hope when he brings fabric for a special garment. Lily survives on his first payment, and immerses herself in sewing and embroidering an incomparable garment for him, as her tidy plan continues to unravel. Theophilus, Lord of Ribeauville, takes his responsibility to his townspeople seriously and, therefore, does not dally with local women. Desire wars with duty when Lily glances up at him while adjusting the hem on his Easter tunic. As her deteriorating circumstances push them together, Theo and Lily learn that the path to his heart just might be through his wardrobe, though the exquisite outfit she creates is the only part of her that fits in his precarious aristocratic world.

Blog Tour~Featuring Allie Boniface and The Promise of Paradise along with 25 itunes Giveaway.

Welcome to The Promise of Paradise blog Tour. Today I have the pleasure of welcoming Allie Boniface to the blog. Please enjoy this fun excerpt.

~The Promise of Paradise~
~Excerpt~

Near the curb, engine still running and rock music bellowing from the speakers, idled a red pickup truck. White and yellow flames danced along both sides. Bending over the tailgate was a broad, bare, definitely male back. Yow. No wonder Jen looked like she was about to start drooling. Even one floor up, Ash could trace the outline of nearly every muscle in his arms and back. A bright red and yellow king cobra tattoo curled around his left triceps. Wavy brown hair fell across the sides of his face. His jeans, faded in all the right places, sat low on his hips. Ash squinted harder and ran one hand over her hair.

Oh God. They still make men who look like that?

“Turn around, please,” Jen commanded under her breath. As if he’d heard her, he straightened up, biceps flexing as he hauled two large boxes from the back of the truck and turned up into the sidewalk. Her sidewalk. He looked up, and Ash’s heart dove into her stomach. A neatly trimmed goatee underscored a crooked nose. He flashed a smile and winked.

“Hey,” he called up. “You live here?”

Jen nodded and jabbed a thumb in Ash’s direction. “She does.”

“I’m Eddie West. Movin’ in today.” It was hard to hear him over the noise of the truck’s humming engine and the music. Ash watched his mouth move instead.

“Need any help?” Jen asked.

Eddie shook his head. “Nah. I’ve just got a couple of boxes to bring in. The rest is coming tomorrow. But thanks.” He continued up the sidewalk.

Jen cupped her hands around her mouth and yelled down. “Come up later, if you want.”

Ash elbowed her. “What are you doing?”

Eddie backpedaled and nodded, grinning wider. As he disappeared from their view, the heavy front door creaked open and, after a few seconds, thudded shut behind him.

Jen straightened up. “See? I told you he’d be good-looking.” She rolled her eyes. “He’s beyond good-looking, Ash.” She fell back against the railing, hands to heart in a dramatic pantomime. “He’s perfect.”
