Happy New Year- Resolutions and Blog News!!!!

(photo)

Happy New Year!! I hope your holidays were great...well I guess tomorrow is technically the new year. Im looking forward to many great books and I have some great resolutions and new blog features to share with you.

So first off I want to give a big thanks to the lovely Jenn at  Sapphire Designs for creating some awesome feature buttons to use at Tinasbookreviews. The first is for my new feature Saturday Spotlight, a weekly feature that highlights an author, their book and occasional giveaway. This will run weekly and hopefully will be a great way for authors to introduce themselves to bloggers.

The second feature is a bi-weekly (or whenever Im in the mood) event called Shelf Cravings and was inspired by the countless number of meme's out there that focus on new release books. I wanted to have my own to share books Im looking forward to, books I want to read or books that I have just discovered. Sometimes a great book gets overlooked and a little hype might gain some new readers for that author.

Im still working on the mother/daughter review thing....we just haven't read the same book yet that I haven't already reviewed.......and with me reading so many review books and C with school stuff, we don't have time....someday we will do this!! Aren't those buttons great....to have your own made go visit Jenn at her blog Sapphire Designs.

My Resolutions for 2011

Ok so besides a spending budget to pay off my car and shedding 20 pounds my book goals include:

Read 150 books for 2011 and complete all challenges..
Read the entire Harry Potter Series
Which btw I joined two more....Parajunkee's Vampire Challenge and Book Soulmates Zombie Challenge...(I had to get a few monsters in there.....)

~Comment more on the blogs I love
~Become more picky in review books, not taking on everything, only books Ill actually read
~Have more contests and giveaways.

Well those are my main goals this year, Im hoping in 2012 Ill be walking faster, doing more than 2 push-ups, have no car payment and be able to say yeah I read those Harry books............

So, what are your reading and personal goals this year?

Winterlong Random Magic Tour- Winter Reading Circle

Welcome to the Winter Reading Circle: Tales for a Winter Night, part of the winter season Random Magic Winterlong tour.

Find some nice and cozy – or dark and spooky reads perfect for wintertime, on this fun blog hop.

Tinasbookreviews is stop #2 on the tour and here are my picks for great winter reading.......

Winter Reads
All synopsis taken from Goodreads

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Paperback, 225 pages
Published by Penguin Classics (first published 1818)

Book Synopsis

The epic battle between man and monster reaches its greatest pitch in the famous story of Frankenstein. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor himself to the very brink. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship and horror.

**Frankenstein is a dark read, one that tells the eternal battle between man and God and ultimately mans desire to be God. Reading this story in the dead of winter at nighttime by a roaring fire would defiantly give you the full effect.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Paperback, 838 pages
Published by Penguin Classics (first published August 1st 1873)

Book Synopsis

A magnificent drama of vengeance, infidelity, and retribution, Anna Karenina portrays the moving story of people whose emotions conflict with the dominant social mores of their time. Sensual, rebellious Anna falls deeply and passionately in love with the handsome Count Vronsky. When she refuses to conduct the discreet affair that her cold, ambitious husband (and Russian high society) would condone, she is doomed. Set against the tragic love of Anna and Vronsky, the plight of the melancholy nobleman Konstantine Levin unfolds. In doubt about the meaning of life, haunted by thoughts of suicide, Levin's struggles echo Tolstoy's own spiritual crisis. But Anna's inner turmoil mirrors the own emotional imprisonment and mental disintegration of a woman who dares to transgress the strictures of a patriarchal world....In Anna Karenina Leo Tolstoy brought to perfection the novel of social realism and created a masterpiece that bared the Russian soul.

**Tolstoy was a Russian writer, when I think of Russia I think of winter and severe cold. Anna Karenina is an epic story, one laced with political drama, romance and the struggle of ones soul. Tolstoy's story's are deep and multi layered, not the sparkly romances we all tend to love, but intense thought provoking characters......winter is the perfect time to tackle a Tolstoy.

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Published June 16th 2005 by Penguin (first published 1866)

Book Synopsis

The poverty-stricken Raskolnikov, a talented student, devises a theory about extraordinary men being above the law, since in their brilliance they think “new thoughts” and so contribute to society. He then sets out to prove his theory by murdering a vile, cynical old pawnbroker and her sister.

The act brings Raskolnikov into contact with his own buried conscience and with two characters — the deeply religious Sonia, who has endured great suffering, and Porfiry, the intelligent and discerning official who is charged with investigating the murder — both of whom compel Raskolnikov to feel the split in his nature. Dostoevsky provides readers with a suspenseful, penetrating psychological analysis that goes beyond the crime — which in the course of the novel demands drastic punishment — to reveal something about the human condition: The more we intellectualize, the more imprisoned we become.

** Another Russian writer who tackles some very deep questions, its interesting to see Dostoyevskys reflections in this novel (research his life, its depressing) Ive only made it half way with this novel because its long, intense and very deep. A gloomy week and dark nights will help set the mood for Crime and Punishment.

Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah
Hardcover, 394 pages
Published February 2nd 2010 by St. Martin's Press

Book Synopsis

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard: the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters. As children, the only connection between them was the Russian fairy tale Anya sometimes told the girls at night. On his deathbed, their father extracts a promise from the women in his life: the fairy tale will be told one last time - and all the way to the end. Thus begins an unexpected journey into the truth of Anya's life in war-torn Leningrad, more than five decades ago. Alternating between the past and present, Meredith and Nina will finally hear the singular, harrowing story of their mother's life, and what they learn is a secret so terrible and terrifying that it will shake the very foundation of their family and change who they believe they are.

** I must have a thing with Russia and wintertime.......Anya tells her story in present day America but reflects back to a time so dreadful it will make your skin crawl. The vivid tale of cold and gloom seep off the pages in this horrific story of a winter in Russia, where Stalin is in power, the food is gone and heat is a craving beyond anyones grasp.

Blue Aspen by Tenaya Jayne
Paperback, 260 pages
Published August 31st 2009 by iUniverse.com

Book Synopsis

When seventeen-year-old Dulcee Elders' mother embarks on a road trip from their home in California, Dulcee knows something odd is about to happen. Her suspicions are confirmed when they arrive at Uncle Jack's house outside of Durango, Colorado. Without another word, Dulcee's mother is gone, and Dulcee faces life with her reclusive and wealthy uncle in a looming rural mansion.

Dulcee has suffered from insomnia ever since her father died more than ten years ago. But once at home at Uncle Jack's, inexplicably Dulcee now can sleep; sleep brings not only strange and intricate dreams, but a dream lover. For now, Vincent Sands is only the silhouette of a man, but when Uncle Jack leaves town for business, Dulcee's dream world and reality collide. Once she is alone, the silhouette is no longer content to remain only in her dreams. When Dulcee is asleep, Vincent can give her anything she wants, even the ability to talk to her dead father. Inevitably, Vincent must leave when Uncle Jack returns. Dulcee experiences the high price of loving Vincent-an addiction rivaling that of any hard-core drug. Desperate to bridge the gap between them, Dulcee faces a crucial decision that carries irreversible consequences.

** I had the pleasure of reading this story last winter and it was chillingly fantastic. The dark cold of winter literally sucks you in and has you seeking warm socks and a thick blanket. I cant recommend this book enough for anyone looking for a dark, winter read.

Tinas Favorite Things in 2010- Book Trailers/Covers

Lets talk book covers and trailers!! These baby's are getting so good lately. I think those market genius's out there are getting the clue that good trailers+covers= big hype!!

So here are my top five trailers and top five cover favorites this year.

Immanuel's Veins- Ted Dekker

My favorite trailer this year was Immanuel's Veins. I think I posted it here at my blog about fifty times....I think I might be getting a little to fan girl on Mr. Dekker....

Crossing Oceans- Gina Holmes

2. Crossing Oceans....I know its simple but I found it lovely and the music sets the tone for the entire story....sad, major sad...but with a twist of hope at the end....

Linger- Maggie Stiefvater

3. Linger...I mean come on could this lady seriously be anymore talented!! I want to learn how to bag pipe and have my husband prance around in a kilt....AWESOME!!

Matched- Ally Condie

4. Matched- I loved the Matched Trailer...short but to the point, it was also a favorite book of mine this year. Good story, good trailer, great cover!!

Tell me a Secret- Holly Cupala

5. Tell Me a Secret-  lastly but in no way least and in no way last because I LOVE book trailers, I thought  Holly Cupalas Tell me a Secret was fantastic!! I also just finished reading this book and it was a five star for me. Ill be posting the review after the new year.

I like the animated trailers much more, I think the art gives it more of the book feel, rather than live actors in a trailer but I like the actor ones too so kudos for books and the people that write them!!

And my Five Favorite Covers this year were......

The Replacement- I love the creepy baby buggie and overall feel of the cover which beautifully sets the tone in the novel.

Halo- While I didnt like this novel I LOVED the cover, probally my favorite one this year. I love the angles wings and overall feel of love it inspires.

Nightmare- just looks creepy with that womans head coming out of some substance...perhaps the dreamworld or the world between the living and the dead.

Infinite Days- I love those eyes and the glossy look of the cover, not to mention the clean nostrils...always a plus in my book........

Tandem- Is that a creepy mask, a painted face, I love the use of red and black with the opalescent face. The face is almost colorless which gives the illusion of mystery perhaps seductive or dangerous.

And that completes Tina's Favorite Things of 2010, it was a great year!!

Tinas Favorite Things in 2010- TV Love

I'm not a big TV girl, I mostly read at nighttime after the house is quiet. I only religiously watch House because its the only show me and my hubby Matt both like. Recently though we both really like The Walking Dead. Otherwise he hates vampires and chick drama- so I DVR most of the series and catch up when I can.

1. House- The show is great....but the real reason I watch it is to hear all of House's great snarky remarks.

2. I Survived- This show is one of those docu-dramas on the Biography Channel. It amazes me what people can endure and what they can go through in order to live or protect themselves. Most of the story's are people being attacked by other people, but some are animal attacks, natural disasters and so on. I think the scariest one I saw this year was about a woman who was attacked by a man dressed as a Ninja (in her house) only to find out he had been living in her attic. The way she told the story was so frightening it gave me goosebumps. I think I slept with the lights on that night and was listening to all the creaks in my house...my poor husband- I bugged him all night with....."what was that, did you hear that, go check in the attic"...........I think at one point he threw a pillow at me and yelled Stop Watching that stupid show!!!!

3. The Vampire Dairies- CWs fun vampire drama. I'm still torn on teams. I was all for Damon, until he went all crazy and tried to kill Elena's brother....So far though I love the way the season is going.

4. The Walking Dead- I love Zombie dystopian, end of the world, everyone is fighting for their life kind of story. I was really surprised at how good the plotline and acting is.

5. The Biggest Loser- Nothing makes me want to shed pesky pounds more after watching people get their butts kicked by Jillian. Personally Id rather have Bob come train me into shape....Jillian scares me.....she would make a awesome killer zombie on The Walking Dead......

6. Big Love- I got caught up in this show last year and had to Netflix all the previous seasons. This is a very naughty show...but I was fascinated looking into the world of Polygamy and that's why I got excited watching number 7.

7. Chuck- Hilarious!! Morgan and Awesome make this show for me, I love Chuck but come on can we have more Morgan semantics please!!!

I also watch American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance with the kids. They seem to be the only family shows we can all watch together. I'm actually excited to see what Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will bring to the show in 2011.

Tinas Favorite Things in 2010- Movies

More of my Favorite Things this year outside of just books include movies,TV shows, music and great finds. My Favorite top 10 movies this year were......

1. Inception- This was the best movie I saw this year. I loved the twisty plotline, the special effects, the cinematography was awesome, the colors and sounds, everything about the movie just wowed me, not to mention an actor called Leonardo!!

2. The Book of Eli- Can you say ultimate dystopian world? Besides the plotline, which was brilliant with an equally shocking brilliant end- I thought the world building and overall feel of the environment is what sold this film. Its grim, violent, disturbing and the actors rocked.

3. Shutter Island- WOW- ok another Leonardo movie (is this guy the best actor or what) this was so twisty and mysterious. I didn't figure anything out until its big reveal....and for me, that's what makes a movie experience the best, when you travel the road with the character and get all tied up in the drama without figuring things out.

4. Eclipse- I mean really could I leave this off the list....even if this movie had sucked (haha..sucked) all the anticipation, Edward, seeing Edward bite Victoria's head off, seeing Edward get other than mopey....GREAT!!
5. Dear John- This was the best adaptation of a Sparks novel IMO, while the ending was changed (drastically) I actually enjoyed the movies ending better. It gave the readers of Dear John closure and watching Channing Tatum for two hours didn't bother me in the least......oh not to mention the scene in the hospital...which had me bawling. Basically Ive loved all of Sparks books and movies....except for the movie The Last Song...(ugh barf city)

6. Harry Potter 7- Part One- Its Harry Potter- what more can I say????

7. The Switch- Jason Bateman is why I loved this movie. The character, the quirky storyline all worked for me. I thought it was really funny too. While Aniston seems to be the same character in every movie I see her in, it worked for this one.

8. Ramona and Beezus- This was adorable!! One of the cutest and feel good family movies Ive seen. I loved that this movie had no shred of innuendo, was easy on the kissing and romantic themes. It was just a cute kid story with great imagination and a cute cat.

9. Charlie St. Cloud- Dont be hating on Zac--- he was really good in this movie. I loved the plotline, I thought it mixed mystery, romance and the supernatural all together wonderfully. It even made me a cry....a little....

10. Despicable Me- This was another great kids movie I saw this year and I laughed almost through the whole thing. My kids at one point looked at me while I was laughing and were like I don't get it.....The Bank of Evil...I loved it!!

Honorable Mentions

Those were my top tens but I also really liked: The Lovely Bones, Remember Me, Letters to Juliet, The Other Guys, Our Family Wedding, The Runaways and Dairy of a Wimpy Kid.

The Saturday Spolight- Introducing Christine Schulze

The Saturday Spotlight- Shining the Light on -CHRISTINE SCHULZE

Today Im excited to introduce you all to Christine Schulze. Thanks Christine for stopping by and talking to us about writing and your new book Bloodmaiden.

One of the common questions I get asked as an author is what inspires me. My simple reply is that I believe my inspirations come from God and that people in my life, above all things, inspire me. But I’ve gleaned inspiration from a variety of interesting sources, so I’d like to share with you the inspirations for some of my favorite books.

The Gailean Quartet, my favorite series of all time, was actually inspired by the main reason I gave above—people in my life. In particular, Dr. Gail Hagler Fleming, whom I still declare is the most awesome teacher ever. I first took Music Appreciation with her at Southwestern Illinois College. Pained to leave that class, I ended up joining her choir. It was one of the best experiences of my life. At the time I took choir, I was going through some hard times in my personal life. Choir and Mrs. Fleming’s presence gave me something to look forward to—and inspired a “magical, musical” series full of rich characters and intricate plots, making it one of my favorite series I’ve written to date. Mrs. Fleming retires this coming spring in 2011, but her inspiration to myself and students like me will live on in these books. I plan to take choir one, last time to relive the magic once more.

Bloodmaiden and Black Lace are actually two of my books inspired by photography. I admit I have a small streak of vanity, and every now and then, I’ll come up with a cool idea for a photo shoot. Sometimes, the pictures turn out so awesomely that I must conjure an accompanying book! Bloodmaiden, my most recently published novel with Old Line Publishing, is such a book. I also have a series of anthologies. The first is Bloodmaiden: a fantasy anthology, published by Victory Tales Press. The second is Broken: A Horrifically Romantic Anthology, which I also hope to publish with them. The third will be Black Lace: A Darkly Epic Anthology. I haven’t even done the photo-shoot yet, but I can envision me and lots of black lace and maybe a piano—and I know it will inspire many an interesting tale!

The Last Star is a book I have not yet published because I’ve decided on it being the book I submit to agents, to try and get into a big publishing house. Its a middle-grade fantasy adventure, and it was inspired by many things. First off, Diana Wynne Jones’ Dogsbody. Now, I love Jones’ work for its rich, unique worlds and quirky but lovable characters. I haven’t gotten to read Dogsbody though I still desperately want to get my hands on a copy. But after reading only the blurb and first couple of paragraphs in a bookstore, I was hooked and knew I had to write a book with stars. Also inspired by Paper Mario, as well as my earth science class—we were learning about astronomy at the time—I incorporated many scientific terms like “blue stars”, “falling stars”, “white dwarfs”, and “supernovas”, while adding magical meanings and twists to these terms. It is quite the fun and unique read with a whimsical story and characters, as well as some educational value, though hidden beneath the magic.

Silent Hero is my first fan-based work, inspired by Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda. The Zelda games have actually inspired many of my books. When I created the world of Loz, for example, which appears in many of my books, I named the world thus as a tribute to Legend of Zelda; Loz is an acronym. I got this idea from Swiss Family Robinson and Robinson Crusoe, one being named similarly to the other because of one author drawing inspiration from another. Silent Hero, on the other hand, is a fan fiction, but I of course tried to write it as professionally as anything else I write. The only difference is, of course, it is not edited; however, it is available for free download on Smashwords, and quite a few of my readers have expressed enjoying the story and quality of writing. For this I’m quite grateful; especially when you get into a fan-based work, it can be easier to offend readers than please them.
Well, I could go on, but that might make this post far longer than anyone would want to read. So, hopefully you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into a quirky fantasy and Christian-fantasy author’s strange, winding, twisting mind. That said, God bless, happy reading, and may some of you get to delve into my worlds and enjoy my stories! You can read about all my books, including reviews, and watch out for give-aways here:

Thanks, Tina, for having me, and to everyone who took the time to read and spend a few moments with a young, starving, but ambitious writer.

About the Book- Bloodmaiden

Zale. Gauthier. Varden. These three dynasties...

They all sound like something out of an ancient, oriental myth or fairy tale. The concept of humans and dragons helping and living in harmony with one another, without fear. To me, that's exactly what they are. A distant dream only read of, whispered secretly, quietly yearned for.

For, you see, I am the new Quelda of Tynan.

These words echo the mystery, horror, and romance found within Schulze's fantasy novel.

Along with her new husband, Chalom, Crislin must choose to embrace cruel tradition, run from it, or stand against it. The young couple's only hope is to rally the help of the three peaceful dragon dynasties of Sulaimon-but tradition is not on their side, even outside the realm of Tynan. The dragons outside Tynan's borders have been rumored as too stubborn and proud to believe their Tynanian brothers would commit such horrors as inflicted upon the Quelda. Gaining their aid is not a likely hope. Yet, any hope at all is valued in Tynan...

If they are to stand a chance of bringing cruel tradition to a permanent end, Crisilin and Chalom must brave the constant, consuming blizzards of the Ever-white. They must brave the three dynasties and the challenges awaiting there. Together, they must convince the dragon emperors to allow them access to the shrines which house the sacred Aria - protective strands of music which may be able to disperse the evil from Tynan and unite the four dynasties of Sulaimon as a whole once again. Their only aid stems from a sprite whose moods are as unstable as her magic, a young minstrel, and a mysterious fox. Despite the odds, such plans are daring, dangerous, unprecedented, but fully possible - if they can escape the Wall first.

WOW- that sounds fabulous!! Thanks Christine for stopping by and best of luck to your writing adventures and new book Bloodmaiden!!

Halo by Alexandra Adornetto

Halo by Alexandra Adornetto
August 31st 2010 by Feiwel & Friends
Hardcover, 496 Pages

Book Synopsis

Three angels are sent down to bring good to the world: Gabriel, the warrior; Ivy, the healer; and Bethany, a teenage girl who is the least experienced of the trio. But she is the most human, and when she is romantically drawn to a mortal boy, the angels fear she will not be strong enough to save anyone—especially herself—from the Dark Forces. Is love a great enough power against evil? (Goodreads)

Review

1. The Cover- Holy genius marketing designer, due to the fact this is one of the most beautiful covers Ive seen on a YA book I was instantly attracted to the novel. Just proving to you once again book covers sell. Halo could of said, three angles come to earth...the end....and it still would of sold to someone for cover appeal alone.

2. The author- What an accomplishment to be a published author at the young age of 18.

Why Halo didn't work for me......

I really liked the premise of Halo, three angels on a mission from God to save the youth of a small town who will fight a dark evil and then one of them will fall in love, sounds right up my alley.

Unfortunately Halo failed to deliver what the premise promised. The plot- number one was the same Twilight cliched story that's been told ten thousand times this year, Bethany was Bella only more naive, Xavier was Edward only not as stalker boy. Also the plot moved along way to slow, I had serious ADD while reading, I would read a few pages, set it down, pick it up, read a few pages, go do dishes, read a few pages, get sucked into Dora the Explorer, you get the drift. The novel could have been chopped down to a 200 page novel and the reader would not have missed anything important.

By far though, the biggest issue I had with Halo was the angels themselves. I'm always critical of characters drawn from the Bible and when you use Gabriel the Archangel, you don't make him an idiot. The main characters in Halo were suppose to powerful immortals and all three angels lacked some serious commonsense skills especially Bethany, the girl couldn't be anymore foolish. I couldn't buy the logic, no way do angels sent by God, become stupid, get drunk and contemplate having sex, they might but then those would be called fallen angels. Bethany made decisions that even a teen would stop and think about before doing and for all her supposed divinity, she came off weak and ignorant. Very silly story for immortal beings, even more silly when it all came together.

Rating

Halo is recommended to teens, 14 and up although I personally wouldn't recommend this novel. Content includes: Mild action, underage drinking, evil vs good scenarios, religious themes (mostly Catholic dialog) mild sexuality including kissing and discussions on having sex.

Review

This was a fun cookbook to read through. I liked the very simple recipes and easy ingredients Denise incorporates in her recipes. The stuff can be found at any grocery store and you wont be combing health food stores for things you've never heard of.....I think this cookbook would be great for single moms, family's who are super-busy or people who just need easy recipes but still want to cook a big meal. We have a few nights during the week when its just complete nonsense over here, I made Denise's Sloppiest Sloppy Joe's and the kids devoured them.

**While I think this cookbook was fun and easy, its way to pricey on Amazon and Barnes and Noble, I would look for it on sale or check it out from the library before spending the money.

Rating

Its all about chicken, meat and flavors....anyone can read this and cook a recipe from it, I would recommended it to anyone (except PETA people) who enjoy easy cooking....

3/5- Cookbook

Calling All Authors!!

Calling Authors
 Cool Text: Free Graphics Generator

This year I have had to turn down alot of review requests. While I love getting requests and I except many of them, I have one brain and only two eyes so this limits me to the amount of time I can spend reading. I wish I could read all your books but I cant.....So instead of turning authors away, Im offering those that I cant read a chance to spotlight your book on my new feature: Saturday Spotlight.

Saturday Spotlight will feature an author, promote an authors book, offer a guest post and an optional giveaway. Posting on the feature especially if your offering a giveaway, is almost guaranteed to provide an author with a reviewer. This is another way to introduce yourself to bloggers, reviewers and a bit of free publicity. Every Saturday will be devoted to one author, my slots are already filling up but I would love for this to be full for the entire year of 2011. This is open to all authors and publishers.

In this open-hearted no holding back memoir, Dina Kucera shares her battles with alcoholism and drug addiction. Not only is Dina fighting her own demons but trying to battle those of her children and family as well. She has three daughters, ranging from 28 to 14 who all have severe problems. From mental disorders like ADD and OCD, to severe drug abuse on crystal meth and heroin. Her mother is suffering from Parkinson's disease, her grandson is a special needs child, one of her daughter's is a lesbian (which is not a problem, but causes it own set of emotional drama) her husband is unemployed, she works as a cashier at a grocery store and her husbands twin brother has just moved in...............................

Half way through this I was thinking..."I’m probably not the best person to review this novel". Dina makes a statement in her book that states most people who don’t have children or children on drugs always give advice to parents who do and don’t have a clue what their talking about….I can raise my hand and tell you up front I have no clue what its like to be addicted to drugs….unless you count diet coke I’m not even near the vicinity of understanding what Dina deals with day in and day out. I have no idea what its like to watch one of my kids slowly kill their body with crystal meth and heroin or be in place where I thought giving my child pot to smoke would help wean her off meth………Dina’s life is so messed up it almost seemed made up, how does one family have so many burdens? How she got through it, must have taken amazing strength and sheer determination, not to mention a stay in the mental ward.

Reading through Dina’s story made me stop and think about myself and how I view people with severe addictions, had this been a fiction novel I would have ripped the mothers character to shreds. I have a very hard time dealing with parents who use drugs and alcohol and neglect their kids, worse when those habits transfer to their kids. I would have stated all the things she should have done and all the things she could do. Funny thing about life though, you never know how your going to handle things until there presented to you. For me this was eye-opening, it was sad to learn people really live like this and sometimes no matter how hard they try there's no help, all the doors have been slammed shut and everyone looks the other way. It makes me want to open a free rehab center for teens and parents who have no money but are desperate to get clean. It makes me want to reach out and offer help to the drug addict in my family, most importantly though I think it really helped me see Dina's side of the argument, see the gray that's often overlooked between the black and white.

Tinas Favorite Things 2010- Book Love

Its time for more of Tina's Favorite Things...I know your week has now been completed!! In this weeks edition I will be sharing my Favorite grown-up books of 2010.

1. Backseat Saints by Joshilyn Jackson - My favorite read this year was a story about a young naive woman who go's from a childhood abusive relationship to a marriage filled with abuse, control and domination and also had me on an emotional journey throughout the entire story. When Rose finally decides to leave her husband Thom, the story became the will to survive and sheer determination. Rose was the quiet hero who slowly but overwhelmingly realizes her worth as a woman and overall her value as a human being who doesn't deserved to be hit....by ANYONE. I loved this for its southern flair and likable main character. Although the sex scenes were pretty hot and some a bit disturbing, everything in this novel created a fusion of great storytelling.

2. Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah- This story broke my heart a hundred times and it has one of the most touching, tear sobbing endings Ive read. Winter Garden was defiantly not a feel good book, it rips you apart with emotion and for me reading about Anya's life in Russia during the time of Stalin was terrifying. The book made me think about my life and how convenient things are for me, what I take for granted everyday...things like food, water and heat. Its one of those stop you in your tracks thoughts- what would happen if the bare necessity's of living got stripped away...what would you do if your child sat starving to death? I thought about this book for weeks after I read it......... and you know those are always the good ones....the ones that stay with you.

3. Still Missing by Chevy Stevens- You want to talk about messed up...Well crack open this book and meet "The Freak". This book was crazy good- and by crazy I mean just that. Annie tells her story in a therapy season and while disturbing its a complete suck you in and not let go till the end type of book. The ending btw is a complete shock and Annie the cynical gal turned victim was a complete surprise in her turn out.

4. Crossing Oceans by Gina Holmes - Hello bawl city!!! Although one of saddest books I read this year, it also was one of the most touching. Ms. Gina presents to us Jenny, a single mother burdened with mistakes, a bad past and broken relationships. Throughout the novel Jenny is dying of cancer, so right from the beginning we all know whats going to happen- its just getting there that tore my heart apart, I was seriously debating stock in Kleenex while reading, even the book trailer got me a little misty.....( Read review and see the trailer HERE)

5. Nightmare by Robin Parrish- After all those heart breakers I needed to find a thriller...and Parrish for sure delivered that for me in this bite my nails, scary as Hell (literally) take on the departed, the supernatural and ghost hunting. I found this book well researched, thought provoking and above all else shaking in my boots.

6. Immanuel's Vein's by Ted Dekker- Oh how could I not put my favorite author on the list. Unbeknownst to Mr. Dekker Im like his unpaid super spokesperson. I loved this story mostly due to the fact that Dekker stepped out of the box of comfortable Christian Fiction. I loved that he used specific words like breast, tongue and "poopy" to make the common Fundamentalist shriek and gasp. Besides the shock value (that I didn't see) I thought IV was a great finish to the Circle Series and highly entertaining.

7. The Preachers Bride by Jody Hedlund - This is one the first novels Ive read about The Puritans and I really loved the historical background and lovely romance between the main characters. I thought it was warm hearted, serious when it needed to be and funny at the same time. I think the true surprise came at the end when I found out who the novel was about and brought a whole new aspect to the book for me.

8. Blood Law by Jeannie Holmes- This book was a huge surprise for me...(Im no longer reading adult PNR on my blog, earlier this year I was and by far this was the best from that genre for me) I think Holmes offered something different with Alex and broke past cheesy pnr plotlines and show me your hot member dialog to present in depth characters, serious racial commentary's and still managed to stay true to a good vampire story.

9. Stuff Christians Like by Jonathon Acuff- Can you say pee my pants funny. I actually just read this a few weeks ago and haven't even had chance to review it....but I can tell you after reading this (alot of it out loud to my husband) I felt like I had done a hundred sit ups from laughing so hard. Acuff does a hilarious job of making fun of Christian culture and the funny things we do, think and feel. Nothing harming of course just straight up fun and underneath the humor some actual serious questions to ask yourself.

10. The Help by Kathryn Stockett- I know this was published in 2009 but I had to add it to my list. One of my favorite things about a book is when it has the power to transport me to a different time era. I felt while reading this I was there in Mississippi with these women in the story who became my friends. I wanted to hug Abbi, smack Hilly to the floor and shake Ms.Celia to her senses.......The Help this year made it into my top tens of all time. I loved it!!! You can hear me swoon about it some more here.

Honorable Mention- Veracity by Laura Bynum- Another 2009 book but hey this my list so yay for 2009.....By far this has to be the most messed up, disturbing dystopian novel Ive ever read. Take a bunch of popular YA dystopians mush them up together mature them by 1000 and add super freaky, super creepy, rape city and horrendous circumstances, what do you get.... Veracity. To be honest this one was a hard book to get through, I took my time reading it and really tried to let the story soak in the pores...what went in was a crazy look at a government gone wrong and thoughts of could this happen to us? I added this book to my favorite list due to the questions it provoked and how long I lingered on the story. Veracity is defiantly an experience I wont soon forget.................read review here.
