Blog Tour~ Shadows of Valor featuring author Elise Park and $15 Amazon GC Giveaway

Welcome to the Shadows of Valor blog tour! Today Im thrilled to welcome author Elsie Park to Tinasbookreviews for a special guest post.

Hi Elsie! Im very excited about your book and having you on the blog today. Im wondering, why did you choose this genre (historical romantic fiction) and what was your  inspiration for writing
SHADOWS OF VALOR?

Tina, thank you for having me. I’m honored to be highlighted and thankful for the support as an author.

I have always loved fantastical and historical stories about princesses, knights, pirates, Vikings, wizards, dragons, and anything adventurous in another time, especially intertwining a sweet love story. I don’t dislike contemporary stories, but since I’m already living a contemporary life, I often want to read about times and places far from my own. I like to get lost in unknown worlds . . . places I don’t experience everyday. I chose 1300 A.D. England because I like the clothing, and King Edward’s wool tax causing some people to smuggle their goods created a great backdrop for an exciting story (sorry, that was a run-on sentence).

I’ve always appreciated a hero and heroine with a troubled past who struggle (like everyone else) to overcome their weaknesses. Finding an era where a heavy tax was levied, causing people to turn to illegal acts, really set up my backdrop. A thought came to me as I pieced together a viable story for my characters that people face choices of integrity everyday. Just because we don’t like a specific rule or law, doesn’t mean we should act illegally and hurt others to defy it (though I admit this is often a gray area especially in circumstances of oppressive governments and hierarchies). Though set in the middle-ages, my story-line relates to the modern reader. The age-old tale of good versus evil, good and bad choices, is something that can be written about over and over again with new plots and characters and never get old. It’s something the human race has dealt and struggled with since the beginning of time and isn’t likely to go away.

My former job as a police officer has had the MOST influence over the traits of my hero, The Shadow. In law enforcement training, officers are taught not to trust anyone, to see everyone as a potential threat to safety, to always be on their guard, to be ready for an attack so they can act promptly to protect themselves and save the lives of others. I know why this view is important and necessary, but at the same time, I didn’t like the kind person I was forced to become as a police officer. After I left the force, I eased up on those cynical views, but only a little. To this day, I still retain strong feelings of distrust as I view situations with a leery eye. Some may say that’s what keeps me and my family from being victims of crimes, while others argue that I hold an unhealthy regard for society in general. Be that as it may, I feel I’m somewhere in the middle.

Also, drawn to the poems in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings written by J.R.R. Tolkien, I wrote ballads into my story because music, and the messages they conveyed, played a HUGE role in history. Songs and poems were not only entertaining, but shared real events. It was a way for people to learn and remember their history. So composing the written music for my ballads as well, I was elated when my publisher said they’d put the sheet music into the book. My publisher also gave me the unique opportunity to compile two of my songs into a 2-minute score for my visual book trailer too. I was flattered to take part in it.

I hope contemporary booklovers will appreciate reading about the same struggles we face today, but enjoy it in a medieval setting. The issues, of course, are timeless, in which people in the past dealt with as well. I loved writing SHADOWS OF VALOR and hope readers love it as much as I do.

From a wild land firefighter to a security guard, police officer, and student of botany and zoology, ELSIE PARK has done it all. It was only a matter of time before she wrote her first novel.

While on a hiatus to Italy, Park was inspired by the thick presence of ancient and medieval history. She felt it in its walls, and slowly, yet surely, a story was born.

On the surface, Graywall is content and booming. Lord Shaufton, who presides over the city, is a fine ruler. The poor are well-cared for, the area is popular, and morale is high—but within Graywall’s roots, something dark is stirring. This darkness threatens to overpower the once-peaceful town, until a mysterious figure appears: The Shadow.

As much a figure of fear to the unruly as legend to the innocent, The Shadow is an enforcer of justice and aid to the King. Due to an outrageous export tax set by King Edward, smuggling has tainted the kingdom, so The Shadow is sent to hunt the smugglers down. Contrary to legend, The Shadow is simply a man known as Sir Calan who, although talented and just, struggles to keep his dark thoughts of revenge from becoming ruthless action.

Due to sheer coincidence, The Shadow learns of a deadly plot against Lord Shaufton on a journey to Graywall. Now, he must enter a pseudo courtship with Lord Shaufton’s daughter under his original guise of Sir Calan, all while old emotions are stirred by the lovely Elsbeth, Lord Shaufton’s niece. Elsbeth, it seems, is the only woman who can heal his troubled soul, but she has a story of her own. What transpires is a glorious tale full of deceit, greed, inner struggles, betrayal, and most of all—love.
