Mini-Reviews

Insatiable by Meg Cabot
June 2010  by William Morrow
Ebook Lend (Library)

Ok so who hasn't heard of or read one of Meg's books. The lady is super talented- ranging in books for tweens, teenagers and like this saucy little one for adults. I think I really liked this because of the cheesy soap opera feel it had yet at the same time sticking pretty close to hot vampire legends. Not that I like soap operas..I actually hate them, but Insatiable can defiantly appeal to the gal wanting to read paranormal chick-lit without the very graphic erotic scenes. Meg can write a steamy scene, one that tantalizes and makes your heart race, but they are done very tastefully. This was a lot of fun, I laughed, I swooned (a little) and rolled my eyes in all the appropriate places.

3/5- Paranormal Chick-Lit

Here Lies Bridget by Paige Harrison
Jan 2011 by Harlequin
Netgalley Read

So try as I might I could not get into this little tale of a dead girl trying to make amends with the world...er, highschool. The biggest turn off for me of course was the main character, who essentially was a jerk bully while alive...I mean before comatose. This reminded me of Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver yet it seemed so rushed that it lacked the somewhat seriousness that the other book offered. Theres really nothing funny about a mean girl and although the ending was kinda cute it just wasn't my cup of tea. Im sure younger teen gals will enjoy and maybe even a mean girl who might pick this up will see the error of her ways....

2.5/5- YA-Contemp-bully-ghost girl (?)

Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky
May 2011 by Houghten Mifflin
Netgalley Read

Uh-oh...Im gonna say it...I didn't like this one. Not that the writing was bad, I just couldn't get into the storyline. The pacing for me was just to slow, while Kacvinsky paints a very scary and possible future for a too technology dependant society...I found myself a little bored. Although the book did make me ponder questions like: why are these people living like robots, when are the machines going to go all Terminator on the people and will the classic story of teen rebels fighting the system bring the society back to a time when writing letters are the only way of communication???

The ending was nice and set the story up for sure to come sequels, Ive heard others say great things about Awaken, Id love to hear if you liked it! I find myself becoming very picky about my Dystopians...I think Im forever looking for the next one that will measure up to titles like A Brave New World, The Long Walk or even Collins The Hunger Games.

2/5- YA- Dystopian

I have Water for Elephants sitting on my shelf right now and I'm just itching to get to it. Think I might just push off all my review obligations for a little while and start today.

  6. Doooooood, where have I been? Can't believe I almost missed these mini reviews.

Yes, I was bored with Awaken too. I think I'm getting too picky as well. I will need to check out A Brave New World. Thanks for the suggestion.
