Review

Dinah Harris would rather get through the day and wash her sorrows down with a bottle of wine behind closed doors than have to go back into the active FBI field. Coming off a suspension and long stay giving lectures to incoming agents, Harris is rumored to be washed up, worthless and a joke to the department. Long time partner and friend Agent Ferguson believes otherwise and wants Dinah on his recent case. Without really having a choice in the matter, Dinah finds herself tangled in the Smithsonian Case and on a race to find Thomas Whitfield a renowned scientist and secretary of the Smithsonian who’s been reported missing. Soon, the missing person case leads to an unsolved murder when Whitfield’s body is found in a trunk of a car. Beaten and strangled, Thomas leaves no clues to why and who did this awful deed. The agents both now the next 24 hours is crucial and begin to link all the clues together to find that one missing piece………..

What a fabulous, heart pounding mystery!! Starting Deadly Disclosures was a lot like watching an episode of NCIS, Cave presented a nail biting read along with well developed characters especially in Dinah Harris. At first without knowing to much about her circumstances, I didn’t really understand where all this bitterness and resentment was coming from, so at first it was a little hard to “bond” with Dinah, but it wasn’t hard to see that broken woman underneath all the sourness. Getting deeper into the story, after discovering the horrific loss and tragic events that pulled her into the dark pit, I found myself able to understand and sympathize. I think what I grew to seriously love about her, even at her lowest, mean and drunk, was how relatable she was. Dinah’s choice of escape was alcohol (others choose food, self-mutilation, drugs and so on) and her dependence on the way it numbed her emotions. I think all of us have experienced times in our lives where a cupcake, cigarette or beer sounded a lot better than facing the ordeal or even the pain.

Another aspect I enjoyed about the novel was the intense debate of Creation vs. Evolution. Cave gives the reader both sides of the argument without getting to preachy or to sciencey (is that a word?) and lets one come to their own logical decision. This is the first novel I’ve read that featured young earth creationists and I was pleasantly surprised that Cave took this somewhat controversial argument even among Christians and made it a focal point in her book. Don’t miss out on this fantastic read that will for sure keep you up late and reading until its explosive ending... recommended to anyone who loves mystery’s, action and crime stories!!

  2. Thanks so much for your review, Tina. I'm particularly glad you enjoyed Dinah's journey and the creation/evolution debate. It is one of the big reasons I became a Christian and so am passionate about it! I do hope you enjoy the sequel.
