Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops. Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees. The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?
Review
Pearl is a no playing games teenage vampire who sleeps by day and hunts with her hot vampire boyfriend by night. While a good chase is always thrilling, mostly this vampire clan stays clear of death and doom and only uses feel good compulsion on their victims. Pearl in particular has a taste for the awkward, pimple faced boy at the Dairy Hut. She loves feeding him flavorful ice-cream and then enjoying a little snack herself…from his neck. That is until after one such feeding she is staked in the heart by a Unicorn….
Pearl survives the attack and winds up being delivered back to her home, where her parents and family think a vampire hunter is responsible for the attack. But as Pearl begins to heal from the staking, she also begins changing. Sunlight doesn’t hurt her anymore, she starts developing a conscience and most annoying her parents decide this new found ability requires her to go to high school to find more food sources. With an upcoming family feast hosting the impressive Vampire King, the responsibility has been put on Pearls shoulders to provide the snacks. How Pearl will pull this off, she has no clue…with a growing likeness of her classmates and a small feeling of love towards one in particular. Pearl will have to choose between her family and a high school full of strangers.
Funny, fast moving and even a bit charming gave this book its recipe for tasty goodness. Not only does this book offer the funny though, Durst while giving Pearl a snarky side also presented her as an evolving character, one who changed and grew as the story progressed. I liked her from beginning of the story but wound up loving her in the end. Taking on the issues of loyalty, friendship, love and doing right to others, Drink Slay Love teaches a little lesson about doing the right thing, even when its the hardest choice you'll ever face.......its tone, well done writing and unique voice is everything I've come to appreciate in a Sarah Beth Durst novel.
