In this almost gritty, almost dark story of 20-something Camryn, we get a whole lot of drama in a little amount of time. Traveling across the country to an unknown destination is bound to make anyone edgy, pack on a pile of dead boyfriend and best friend issues and you get the idea of our main character who is running away just to catch her breath. During this little high tale it outta town adventure, Camryn meets Andrew, another character {who is of course mysterious, gentlemanly, sensitive, kinda controlling, funny, musically talented and hawt} on the run from his current problems, packed filled with daddy issues and pending doom.
The two meet on a bus, both traveling for different reasons and not wanting to interact with other people, yet somehow feel a magnetic pull towards each other. An easy friendship develops over the hours of traveling and an unexpected turn of events launches them into not only a bus ride to nowhere but a road trip to discovery, coming of age and true you guessed it: Love.
Not expecting to like this as much as I did, I was really surprised that 3/4 of this book rendered me speechless- as in love with the story-line speechless- I loved the way these characters connected, I loved the slowly developing but enigmatic chemistry of the relationship and I adored the plot when it centered around an epic road trip that would change both characters for the good, you know that whole I met my soul mate on a bus thing.
Yup, I loved this until about the last 75 pages when my road trip turned into a mix of cheap motel sex, Country Strong and My Sisters Keeper, morphing the story and the characters into new ones. The sex scenes and addition of they may become Americas next Country stars, were weird. By weird, I mean I knew these characters at some point were going to collide but when it happened I was like -Whoa- the unexpected "porno-vibe" and there after talk of domination and rape like fantasies didn't fit with the dynamic of the romance that was building in the beginning. I wanted sweet, I wanted tender, but what I got was dirty and a little nasty. D&A works for some stuff, but in this case it just left me with mixed feelings and feeling kinda embarrassed for the characters, due to the fact that instead of a reader I felt like a voyeur and that my friends ruined part of the story for me.

Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the first part, loved the concept and tried not to roll my eyes at the end and still gave this four stars for the writing and originality. So by all means let not my moral compass of not liking cheap hotel sex steer you wrong, contemporary romance lovers or New Adult fans will gobble this up and see it as one of the more stronger Indie new adults out there.

DeleteSunds like I may be a bit too young for this read! LOL
ReplyDeleteSeriously though...I think that a lot of this is all context...what works for some storylines/settings/characetrs does not work for others. I'll not rush to add this to my TBR.
hahaha....yeah it was one of those WTH did I just read!! But it was a really good storyline so dont hesitate to read it if you like New Adult...:)
