Never Say Never by Lisa Wingate
Book synopsis: Kai Miller floats through life like driftwood tossed by waves. She's never put down roots in any one place--and she doesn't plan to. But when a chaotic hurricane evacuation lands her in Daily, Texas, she begins to think twice about her wayfaring existence. And when she meets hometown-boy Kemp Eldridge, she can almost picture settling down in Daily--until she discovers he may be promised to someone else. Daily has always been a place of refuge for those the wind blows in, but for Kai, it looks like it will be just another place to leave behind. Then again, Daily always has a few surprises in store--especially when Aunt Donetta has cooked up a scheme.
Never say Never “floats” between two women’s perspectives. One is Kai Miller, 27 year old drifter and free-spirited gal. A hard past and trust issues make settling down a low priority in Kai’s life. The other is Donetta, a 70 something free-spirited gal traveling with her best friends and headed to the vacation of their lives. When a hurricane halts everything and evacuates the town and cruise, the women’s lives collide together unexpectedly and turn them in a direction that will bring out secrets, healing and unexpected love.
This book sounded good to me, I’ve never read a Lisa Wingate novel before so I was interested to view her style of writing. I must admit the first four chapters were very hard for me to get through. I was a bit confused on the dynamics of the three older women and I felt that I was missing out on some background issues due to the fact that I hadn’t read any of the previous books. The writing was top-notch but I never became fully immersed in the story or the characters, although I thought Kai seemed like a strong developed character and I did enjoy the love aspects between her and Kemp.
The townsfolk of Daily, Texas played a nice part in the story giving the novel that close-knit family feel, filled with humor and the admirable notion of people coming together in the face of tragedy around the corner. I think having read about these previous characters in Daily would have helped me like the story better.
Never say Never explores friendship, jealousy and heartache. The humorous parts in the book outweighed my inability to connect with the townsfolk or the main characters.
No swearing or sex scenes are in this wholesome story, teens and adults alike can enjoy Wingate's novel.
If you’re looking for a humorous, light read laced subtly with seriousness this is one for you. To get the best out of this series I’d recommend reading the first two books before venturing into Never say Never.

I like that there are wholesome books out there that parents and kids can read together. I like that you show a teenager's life where they are good and don't feel the need to swear and do things other teens do just to fit in.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win and thank you for offering this contest!
