DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOR CHAPTERS 18-23
provided by Jenny at Supernatural Snark
Gabi and Lia both face several life and death situations in these chapters, having to pick up weapons in defense of those they love and experiencing first hand the brutality of close combat. If you had the choice between picking up a weapon and standing on the front lines or staying behind to tend to the wounded as necessary, which would you choose?
I would stay behind and tend to the wounded. Im a caregiver by heart and I love helping people, I think being a nurse or tending to the wounded would have been me in a heartbeat. To this day I teeter with my decision on the degree Im working on, I think being a Doctor or a Nurse would have amazing rewards.

All those dresses are so beautiful, I cant imagine the work it must of took into making a dress of that caliber. I wonder too- if wearing one of those felt like wearing drapes... they look really heavy.. maybe that's why women were all cranky back then...they had terrible backaches from the tapestry's strapped to their backs.
If I could have one of those dresses, Id pick the red dress featured on the cover of Sandra Byrds To Die For.

Doesn't that look light and airy...I wonder what the PTA ladies would say if I strolled into a meeting with this puppy on....(hahahaha)
Gabi has crude stitches put in and must endure both their removal as well as the cauterization of the wound. How is your threshold for pain? Do you think you would have simply gritted your teeth as Gabi does?
Hmmm...probably not, my threshold for pain is a big fat zero- I had natural (no pain-meds) birth with my second child. I was crying, screaming and yelling unladylike things to my nurses..... I think after listening to me push, cry and hyperventilate for an hour and a half those girls wanted to knock my lights out!! Luckily for me I had modern day nurses who shushed and sweet talked me through every step.

The whole innocence of it. Im sure there were naughty things going on back then, but it seems men (at least ones of nobility) took courting and winning a woman very serious. I hope that when it comes time for my girls to marry that the gentleman pursues her with honorable intentions and asks my husband for a blessing...cheesy as it seems, there's something so romantic about the notion.....
Gabi and Lia find themselves with conflicting desires toward the end with Lia wanting to return home and Gabi hoping to stay. Do you think that Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay, or is Lia being unfair to Gabi for demanding they go? A little of both?
Well since I completely projected myself onto Gabi, I think Lia was being a selfish whiny teenager...dang-it Lia, cant you just get on board!!!???
LOL- no seriously I think Gabi was being a bit selfish towards Lia, but love was clouding her reason and sometimes love can make us do crazy things....

Ohh, I agree - that dress on the cover of To Die For is really pretty! Yep, I'd give a lot to wear one of those gowns!! :-)
ReplyDeleteWe do crazy things for love all the time, don't we? I think I had a moment where I thought, "Gabs, if you let Lia talk you in to leaving Marcello, we're done." But I still sympathized with Lia (a bit. It's so hard when there's a hot medieval knight distracting me.)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm with you on the To Die For dresses. Gorgeous!

"sometimes love can make us do crazy things" with a picture of the Dugger clan...hysterical! Love your answers!
ReplyDeleteCan't believe next week is the last week :( I love your answers--especially when you were talking about Gabi/Lia in the last one. Love does make you do the crazy!
ReplyDeleteThe innocence of a relationship would be sweet and romantic, and I bet once those lips finally met then (hopefully) there would be fireworks.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with asking the parents for their daughters hand in marriage. I think it's a respect thing and I don't think my father would approve if he wasn't asked for my hand first. Since my brother-in-law did, my future husband (whenever I find him) better step up to the plate!
Will you please, PLEASE wear that dress to your next PTA meeting? That would be completely amazing. Also, please videotape it and post it so I can see:) Love that dress though, it doe look really light and I love those long flowing sleeves. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteAdore your gown choice! And if you did wear it to a PTA meeting, those ladies would so be jealous because you'd be the best dressed person there ;)
ReplyDelete*snorts* Yup, I'd say that is a perfect example of the crazy things people do for love. LOL
ReplyDeleteAnd if I was your nurse when you gave birth without pain meds, I probably would have passed out! In fact, I kind of feel dizzy just thinking about it. :)
i hope your daughters find those Knights in Shining Armor that are still out there (if harder to find in 2011 than in 1322!)
ReplyDeletelove the red dress on the cover of the book!
I can't imagine anyone wanting to knock the lights out if any women in pain. Snicker. I had gone without meds up to 2 hours before I delivered. They offered. I said "yes". Then they were like "oh it'll be soon are you sure?". I'm like "ya, bring on the epideral."
ReplyDeleteI agree a lot of them look like drapes. I think they might have been cranky because of that, having to go through a female time with not meds, and did they wear corsets back then? Prob not being able to breath sucks too :)
ReplyDeleteGreat answers girl, and thanks for this read-a-long it has been really great. Now all I need is someone to do a holloween one for Oct. Like the Near Witch, or Anna Dressed in Blood or something :)
I love the dresses on the book cover which I agree look completely like drapes (or curtains in the UK) it makes me think of that bit in the Sound of Music where Maria makes the kids clothes out of the enormous curtains!
ReplyDeleteI love those dresses- why not go to a PTA meeting in one?!
ReplyDeleteI admire your answer for question 1- I couldn't be a doctor or nurse, I'm too queasy around injuries and useless around people in pain.
Love the dresses :o)
ReplyDeleteAlthough, benefit to the heavy fabrics: You stay warmer in the winter! They didn't have central heating, so I'm betting those heavy, dense fabrics got a whole lot nicer come winter ;o) hehe
I would have wanted to help the wounded as well...I would get myself killed for sure otherwise.
ReplyDeleteYou are right...their dresses look like drapes. I own curtains that could be made into a medieval dress, lol.
Are you saying the Duggars are crazy?! lol.
oh pretty dress. what no threshold for pain and childbirth. oh the horror.
ReplyDeleteLove does make us do silly things and sometimes we can't always see the big picture.
I'm a caregiver at heart too. I'd be useless in battle so staying behind and tending to the wounded would be my choice.
ReplyDeleteThose dresses are beautiful!
Haha! It took me a second to get why you had a pic of the duggars at the end. LOL!
hahahahahahaha, loving the crazy love picture.
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally support the man asking for permission or at least a blessing from the girl's father. Makes my heart melt just thinking about it.
I've been wondering about how heavy the dresses are too. Very Pretty, to be sure, but would it be worth it really?
ReplyDeleteI love the innocence and sweetness of the men too! Very cute.
I agree all men should ask the parent's permission for their daughters hand in marriage, even though it is symbolic it is still honorable to announce his intentions.
ReplyDeleteI definitely could be very happy swapping out a few of my outfits for thos emedieval day dresses--but try to take my jeans and sweater away and it's a battle you're asking for!!!
ReplyDeleteTina, sometimes I really think you are a romantic. And, if I'm ever in medieval times, I would love for you to be my nurse. Well, if you have a nursing degree you can be mine now...uhhh...idk...awkward. *giggles*
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I kind of want a medieval dress of my own now after reading all these posts. They sound so pretty. Too bad it's not all King and Queens ball from that movie with Patrick Dempsey because then we could all get down in our medieval wear! *sigh* I'm done rambling now.
Wouldn't it be cool if you got a bunch of friends to ALL crash the next PTA meeting in medieval garb? A whole new kind of flash mob. But what do I know? I've never attended a PTA meeting in my life (Secret's out: I'm a Bad Mama).
ReplyDeleteAnd your picture of the Duggers...dead from laughter. xoxo
LOL You're so funny.
ReplyDeleteAnd love your dream dress. Mine would have to be red.
Great dress pick, what a great idea Jenny had. :) Way to go having a natural child birth, I had two and did a lot of screaming. lol :)
